A Christmas Gift to You
By Ebeth Weidner
A few years ago, my mom gave me this homily. It's my great-uncle Fr. Samuel Haughton’s last sermon delivered, December 25, 1936. During midnight Mass, he died of a massive heart attack right as he was raising the host up for consecration. My grandfather and uncles were all up front and ran to Fr. Sam and the Eucharist. It was all over the papers the next day.

New Year's Day Is A Holy Day
By Bill Dunn
Here’s a pop quiz: Did you know that January 1st is a Holy Day of obligation? Do you know what the word “obligation” means? No, it doesn’t mean, “If I feel like it,” although that seems to be the way most American Catholics have defined the word in recent decades.

Duc In Altum: Put Into The Deep Discernment Retreat with Bishop Donald Hying
By John Paul Bender
This past weekend I went on a silent discernment retreat at Saint Francis de Sales Seminary. It had been quite a while since I had been on one. The retreat was called Duc In Altum, which literally means, to "put out into the deep" and although I didn't realize that it was a silent retreat when I signed up to go, it was exactly what I needed at this moment in my life.

How I found my Way to the Catholic Church
By Lee Hall
When first contacted about doing a talk at my parish some two years ago, which I believe subsequently lead to this invitation to put it in writing, my first inclination was to say “no”. Not because I wasn’t willing, but I thought, “I’m already too visible in the parish and school. I lector, I’m an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist, I’m with my family at school activities…no one wants to hear

The Scary Word
By Joni Johnson
Over the past few years, we have heard the term “The New Evangelization” repeatedly. In the hearts of most Christians, this word suggests images of street-corner preachers, people knocking on their neighbors’ doors, or TV preachers screaming. But what does it really mean? Is this a word to fear?

On the Law
By Crysaly Aviles
Did you know that to be separated from God all you have to do is break one of His commandments? It doesn’t matter which one. The question is not whether we have sinned against God? The real question is whether we are willing to change? In other words, repent. Many of us have struggled with the idea of being “sinners.”

Pope Francis Addresses Vatican Curia
By Frank J. Maduri
Pope Francis addressed the Vatican Curia warning them against vainglory and feeling superior to others. In what the Pontiff termed a “disease of feeling immortal” is dangerous because as he explained it often leads to a loss of compassion.

Insanity Prayer Workout
By Dom Perry
For those who appreciate working out in the gym, whether they call themselves work out junkies or just the casual gym goers, and for that matter those who cannot work out for whatever reason-- I want to suggest a prayer work out. Like working out in the gym, be it weights, aerobics, martial arts, or boxing--flexing the muscles is a good thing.

Worried?.....
By Michelle Watkins
There are times in my life, as I'm sure in yours, where our lifestyle and inner attitude could best be epitomized by the 1940's comic cartoon character, Ebenezer Jones (a.k.a. The Worry Wart).

A "NEW YORK" CHRISTMAS STORY
By Frank Lloyd
“There are two births of Christ. One unto this world in Bethlehem, the other in the soul when it is spiritually reborn…both result from a kind of Divine invasion” (Ven. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen (1) It was a warm summer morning on that Sunday in June, as I rambled up Pearl St. toting my meters and tools. For a Communications Tech., working the occasional Sunday was “a part of the job”

On the Spirit of Christmas
By Crysaly Aviles
Ever notice how around Christmas time there is a spirit of giving and brotherhood in the air? We call it the spirit of Christmas, and rightfully so, because the essence of this sacred holiday is promulgated by the Spirit of Christ Himself. His Name is the Holy Spirit and He is One with the Holy Trinity. The Holy Spirit is God Himself and He comes to prepare the way for the celebration of our Lo

After Midnight Mass
By Mallory Hoffman
Right now, I am alone. I sit in the living room with the curtains open looking outside. Every thing is still. The only noise I hear is quiet, for now. I sip a glass of wine. I have prepared snacks for the kids and I to eat. They are both adults. Christmases are so different now. The girl child, who has cancer, is exhausted. So, she is sound asleep.

Secret Cynics
By Melanie Jean Juneau
Advent is a time of waiting. But how do I wait? Do I wait stoically or with joy? Do I wait like a child, a child who trusts that his daddy will keep His promises or has life’s disappointments left me jaded and closed off to any spiritual surprises? Come to think of it, how many of us actually expect to receive any joy on Christmas morning? When we are secretly cynical, we will not receive a thing
