By Mallory Hoffman
I am recovering from Christmas and that's why I'm writing today. The boy child has gone home. He had a safe trip. Praise God! He's back at home living his life again. The interruption is over for him for now.

Holiday Parties: The Family Faith Smorgasbord
By Bill Dunn
The recently concluded holiday season reminded many Catholics of an interesting phenomenon: the religious denomination in our country with the most people is the Roman Catholic faith, while the second greatest number of people belong to a group identified as “former Catholics.” Sometimes it seems that most of these former Catholics are the friends and relatives who attended our Christmas gathering

A Christmas Gift to You
By Ebeth Weidner
A few years ago, my mom gave me this homily. It's my great-uncle Fr. Samuel Haughton’s last sermon delivered, December 25, 1936. During midnight Mass, he died of a massive heart attack right as he was raising the host up for consecration. My grandfather and uncles were all up front and ran to Fr. Sam and the Eucharist. It was all over the papers the next day.

New Year's Day Is A Holy Day
By Bill Dunn
Here’s a pop quiz: Did you know that January 1st is a Holy Day of obligation? Do you know what the word “obligation” means? No, it doesn’t mean, “If I feel like it,” although that seems to be the way most American Catholics have defined the word in recent decades.

Make a Difference in Someone's Life
By Rebecca Johnasen
Have you ever seen The Christmas Box with Richard Thomas? What about the sequel Timepiece? James Earl Jones is in it with Richard Thomas. I grew up watching The Christmas Box. It is one of my family's favorite Christmas movies. I watched the sequel several times. These movies are about love and forgiveness. If you have not seen either of these movies, I recommend you watch them as soon as you can.

How I found my Way to the Catholic Church
By Lee Hall
When first contacted about doing a talk at my parish some two years ago, which I believe subsequently lead to this invitation to put it in writing, my first inclination was to say “no”. Not because I wasn’t willing, but I thought, “I’m already too visible in the parish and school. I lector, I’m an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist, I’m with my family at school activities…no one wants to hear

When Thinking "Family", Two Teenagers Set the Bar For Us All
By Larry Peterson
The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Family on the Sunday following Christmas. If you are among the millions of folks who never pay an iota of attention to this family, maybe you should. Why? Because this is the family that "set the bar" for all families.

A "NEW YORK" CHRISTMAS STORY
By Frank Lloyd
“There are two births of Christ. One unto this world in Bethlehem, the other in the soul when it is spiritually reborn…both result from a kind of Divine invasion” (Ven. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen (1) It was a warm summer morning on that Sunday in June, as I rambled up Pearl St. toting my meters and tools. For a Communications Tech., working the occasional Sunday was “a part of the job”

Christmas Traditions in the United Kingdom
By Father John A. Dane
Among the things I remember most about Christmas growing up in South Yorkshire, are the mouth-watering smells emanating from our kitchen in a typical mining village home. The kitchen wasn't large at all, but it was modern by the standards of that day. There was a double gas-ring on which pans holding various vegetables were shuffled around as needed.

On the Spirit of Christmas
By Crysaly Aviles
Ever notice how around Christmas time there is a spirit of giving and brotherhood in the air? We call it the spirit of Christmas, and rightfully so, because the essence of this sacred holiday is promulgated by the Spirit of Christ Himself. His Name is the Holy Spirit and He is One with the Holy Trinity. The Holy Spirit is God Himself and He comes to prepare the way for the celebration of our Lo

After Midnight Mass
By Mallory Hoffman
Right now, I am alone. I sit in the living room with the curtains open looking outside. Every thing is still. The only noise I hear is quiet, for now. I sip a glass of wine. I have prepared snacks for the kids and I to eat. They are both adults. Christmases are so different now. The girl child, who has cancer, is exhausted. So, she is sound asleep.

If You Do Not Believe in Christmas Miracles Maybe You Should Reconsider
By Larry Peterson
I believe, without reservation, that the Christmas season is a time for miracles. I have, over the years, experienced more than one. This was my first. You can decide for yourself if it qualifies.

"Peace on Earth"; Humility is the Key and the Christ Child is the Answer
By Larry Peterson
Peace on earth? Where is it? Is it in Syria? How about Pakistan? It is not in Sudan or Iraq. It is definitely not hanging out in Afghanistan or Iran. Pakistan?—God help us. How about Russia and Ukraine and Ferguson, Missouri?

Holiday Stress Hurts Families
By Bill Dunn
Humorist Dave Barry observes that the holidays are a very special time “when we take a break from our hectic everyday lives to spend quality time with our loved ones, rediscovering all the reasons why we don’t actually live with them.”

Are there Animals in Heaven?
By Karl Erickson
The recent media confusion regarding what Pope Francis said, and did not say, concerning a child’s pet going to heaven makes it abundantly clear that this is a question that lies close to the heart of many believers. While there’s no definitive answer on what happens to our loved pets when they die, some great Christian minds have come down squarely on the side of supporting the possibility

Finding purpose
By Susan Skinner
Have you ever wondered what it is you are called to do? What is your purpose? I have wondered that often throughout my life. I now know for sure, that I am called to follow God’s will and my purpose is to Love. Jesus tells us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27)

Do You See What I See?
By Joni Johnson
There are so many wonders to ponder at Christmas. The story of Christ's birth is a series of miracles: An angel appears to Zechariah. Elizabeth conceives a son in her old age (she who was called "barren"). An angel appears to a virgin and declares that she will give birth.
