An Unexpected Gift
By Lori Conklin
As I sit in my window seat, gazing at the newly fallen snow, its color so white, so pure, so beautiful. The way it covers the ground, the wires, the trees in simplicity creating a one of a kind masterpiece. It’s profoundly peaceful. I take a deep breathe in and close my eyes, and think of a verse from Psalm 51, purify me with hyssop, until I am clean, wash me until I am whiter than snow.

(Catholic) Food for Thought
By Daria Winker
A while back I was talking to someone at work and she told me that she knew I could cook because I was from a good Catholic family. It confused me because even though I do cook and I am from a Catholic famil,; I really couldn't see a relationship. I mean, I do know some very good Catholics that are mediocre cooks, and I know cooks who are not Catholic, even some who are not even religious.

A Woman's Place
By Joni Johnson
The headlines on March 8, 2015, were screaming, “International Women’s Day!” Quotes from famous females were rampant on the internet. The hashtag #notthereyet was being tweeted and retweeted, as those who seek to empower women declare there is so much more to be done in the area of women’s rights. What a concept: a day to focus on the achievements of women.

St. Joseph, the "Shadow Saint": His Example is the Answer to the Fatherhood Crisis in Society
By Larry Peterson
Every March 19, The Catholic Church honors and celebrates a man who, next to the Blessed Virgin Mary, is the greatest of all saints. His name is Joseph. He was Mary's husband and the foster father of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Included among his honors he is venerated as the patron of fathers, workers, and unborn children.

Are Prayers of Petition Really Worth it?
By Pat McDermott
Has anyone else sat at a Service or Liturgy wondering why we continue to pray the Prayers of Petition? Haven’t we (and most other Churches) prayed for peace, the end of hunger and poverty, and many other things for years… decades… even centuries? Yet we still have wars, hunger, poverty etc.

Something's Fishy on Fridays During Lent
By Dean P. Johnson
When I stepping through the backdoor a couple of Fridays ago, I smelled something delicious. I had no idea what it was, but I knew it wasn’t pizza, a Lenten Friday staple. “Fish?” I asked. A brilliant deduction if I say so myself given that every Friday on the calendar magnetically pinned to the refrigerator has a picture of a fish on it.

Gotta Go-Gotta Do!
By Elizabeth Thomas
Oh my! How I needed to read this! A dear friend sent this email, perfect for any time of the year. “ According to a report this year by NPR and the Harvard School of Public Health, more than 63 percent of Americans are battling stress, and a significant number describe their stress as “great.”

Scars
By Michael Adsit
Bickering siblings strategizing for best the seat in the car, while I’m securely strapping my preschooler in his booster seat, mom pushing us out the door as quickly as she possibly can, all for a one-mile ride to school and some quiet time for me at daily Mass. Let’s not forget the winter weather advisory followed by dangerously cold wind chills sweeping the area to begin this day.

It's Not Just a Pregancy
By Catherine Tomlinson
It's called the Miracle of Life for a reason. The journey through pregnancy and child birth is astounding when you think of how scientific the body actually works. Cells multiply and divide at tremendous rates and the female body adapts and creates the perfect host for it's parasitic growth. When the time for birth comes, the body automatically reacts. It instinctively knows that they baby nee

50 Shades of Messed Up
By Crysaly Aviles
The leading actor even says it himself, “I’m messed up” (with much more colorful language.) This movie is dangerous on several levels. It tells its story with a Cinderella undertone that the behaviors portrayed are desirable and sexy. The leading actress is a “commoner” who is swept away by the allure of a billionaire’s attention.

‘Your Wife Is Going To Hell … Because She's Catholic!'
By Bill Dunn
It was such a sweet moment. Almost 30 years ago I was at my friend Pete’s house. His pretty young wife Lori was with us. (Not their real names.) I had been sober for only five months and Pete was not only helping me navigate the journey of sobriety, he also was helping me deal with the fact that I had recently lost my faith in atheism.

When Your Son is "Father"
By Daria Winker
"Oh, Fr. X is your son, you must be so proud" I have heard that quite often in the five years since my son was ordained. I usually smile and say thank you but I am usually thinking that what I am proud of is different than what that speaker is thinking. I am proud of my son for listening to God and doing his will and persevering through two masters degree programs in half a decade of seminary

Do's and Don'ts of Raising a True Princess
By Jennessa Terraccino
“Once upon a time,” begins in books, and those pages come to life in little girls’ bedrooms. Tucked away in closets lies a fluffy mound of well-loved princess gowns. The title “princess” seems to be written on the female heart from an early age. Nevertheless, it is one thing to wear the crown, and another to let it go to your head. Allow me to explain.

A Tomb With A View
By Judy Landrieu Klein
I know, it’s Lent. And I’m out of sync with the liturgical calendar. But I’ve been meditating on the Resurrection in my Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, and something really struck me recently. It involved Peter, John and the tomb of Jesus, which Mary Magdalene had just reported she’d found empty.

A priest once said that when we sin we in turn make Jesus cry. (This is the same Jesus today that once died a horrifically violent death for us.)
