Jesus claims to be God
Before we get started, please check out my previous article, here; Dignity in labour, and here's my latest on Locals; I finished the French course on Duolingo.
And, hey, don't forget, I wrote a book, you can find out more about that, here and here.
So, I was thinking to myself, I don't take a cessationist view of prophecy, nor do I take a cessationist view of (Private Revelation Has Never Stopped) miracles. So, I want to mention two things. As a Catholic, I am not required to believe in private revelations. Some, like Fatima (Fatima - Jimmy Akin's Mysterious World), are Church approved (and no, Sr. Lucia was not replaced by an impostor, she had different teeth because AGING. The same reason I don't have many teeth).
This isn't Church approved, partially because it was largely to Muslims and Coptic Orthodox, but, it's well documented, Our Lady of Zeitoun (Egyptian Apparition, Coptic Church) - Jimmy Akin's Mysterious World. There are some that I believe are flat out frauds (Does the Church Approve of the Bayside Apparitions?), and some, that I am on the fence about (The Mystery of Medjugorje - Jimmy Akin's Mysterious World).
Anyway, I know that a lot of people focus on Jude 3 (Jude isn't really divided into chapters, you could also call it Jude 1:3, if you want), but, let's read what that says.
“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints”.
Okay, I actually have no problem interpreting the ending of public revelation in those terms (I'm a material sufficiency guy, so, keep this in mind). But, even if Jude didn't have that in mind when writing, I think he's accurate.
And, because I'm not a cessationist, although, I believe PUBLIC revelation has ceased, this doesn't therefore mean all prophecy and miracles have ceased. And, I know someone is going to accuse me of being a Charismatic. Actually, I'm not, but I've prayed with them, and the Charismatic Catholics take their faith quite seriously.
No, to get rid of the garbage like Bayside (not saying her name, and I am very much against IVF, but, a dear friend I love very much, was conceived via IVF, she has a soul), you have to discern the spirits. (Speaking of IVF, Trent Horn has a masterclass on that, here; Outlaw This Crime Against Women and Children. Now.).
So, how do we discern the spirits?
“Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hate ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God”. (1 John 4:1-2)
Is chasing conspiracy theories and evil suspicion really living to the will of God? Not that you should never be suspicious or conspiratorial (some conspiracies are true), but, when you do the “Sr. Lucia was replaced by a lookalike (why)? Are you really doing the will of God?
So, again, my issue isn't prophecy or private revelation. It's people who don't take the words of scripture seriously.
“Pray without ceasing, in every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:17-22).
Question, are you you “proving all things” (modern translations generally say “test”, 1 Thessalonians 5:21 Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition). Something isn't bad, just because you're uncomfortable with it. NL Skip navigation Search Avatar image A SLAM DUNK Debate For Catholics (Fatima DEBATE REVIEW).
If your theology is so bad that you think the Virgin Mary telling children to repent is demonic, it's your theology that's the problem.
Use discernment. Don't take someone's word for it. Make sure the claim makes sense.
And that, is why I don't write about private revelation. I am here to spread the good news of Jesus Christ, not to write a clickbait article about Sr. Lucia conspiracies.
