May 8 is the anniversary of St Michael's promised Lombard victory at Mont Gargano. Below chronicles the 7-known events where St. Michael stepped into human activities with unmistakable clarity.
- 490 AD — Chonae, Turkey. At a healing spring tended by Archippus, pagans attempted to destroy the Christian sanctuary by diverting the water. St. Michael appeared, split the rock and redirected the holy spring. This sign by St Michael showed him as protector and guardian of sacred places.
- 490–663 AD — Monte Gargano, Italy. On the mountain above Siponto circa 490 AD, Bishop Lorenzo received multiple apparitions.
- Visit 1. St. Michael declared the cave his sanctuary when he reversed the direction of an arrow shot at a lost bull kneeling at the holy site. The spooked bull-owners went to the local bishop about the arrow-causing injuries. Later, the bishop was later visited by St Michael.
- Visit 2 occurred shortly after the first when bishops arrived to consecrate the cave. They found it already consecrated by St. Michael as evidenced by a preconstructed altar for prayers, penance, healing, and divine protection.
- Visit 3 was May 7-8, 663 AD when St. Michael promised and delivered a decisive Lombard victory on the exact day as foretold.
- 590 AD — Rome, Italy. During a devastating plague, Pope Gregory the Great saw St Michael atop Hadrian’s Mausoleum, sheathing his sword which he saw as a sign the suffering would cease. The plague ended and the site became Castel Sant’Angelo — a lasting symbol of St Michael’s guardianship.
- 708 AD — Mont-Saint-Michel, France. In Normandy, St. Aubert was commanded by St Michael to build a sanctuary on the tidal island. When he hesitated, the Archangel touched his skull, leaving a visible hole. The resulting abbey became one of Europe’s most iconic pilgrimage sites, a testament to St Michael’s call to courage.
- 1631 — Tlaxcala, Mexico. To Diego Lázaro, a young Indigenous man, St Michael revealed a hidden healing spring. After Diego’s miraculous recovery, the site became a place of cures and devotion — a reminder that heaven’s care extends to the vulnerable, overlooked and oppressed.
- 1656 — Avellino, Italy. Amid a deadly plague, Bishop Alfonso Puccinelli received St Michael’s instruction to bless stones from the mountain and distribute them to the faithful. Once the ritual was completed, the plague ceased. This echoed the earlier Roman miracle and reaffirmed Michael’s role as deliverer in times of crisis.
- 1916 — Fatima, Portugal. A year before the Marian apparitions, the shepherd children encountered the Angel of Peace — traditionally identified as St. Michael. He taught Eucharistic reparation and gave mystical Communion, preparing their hearts for the messages of 1917. Here St Michael appears not as warrior but as teacher of adoration.
Heaven is active, attentive and fiercely protective. St Michael's earthly interventions prove we are special souls created by a loving God. These 7 sites show how he steps up when we need purification, education or protections. His immortal dedication and question, “Who is like God” encourages us to lean into his courage and trust. Prayers for his intercession include the St Michael chaplet and prayer. St Michael, pray for us.
