How long O LORD?
Before we get started, please check out my previous article, Who is the Son of God?, check out my latest on Locals (why yes, I did make a table top organ of a 1994 Nu Metal classic; Korn -Blind-(Table top organ cover)
I am half Angeleno. My mother wasn't born in Los Angeles, but, she was raised there, and one of my uncles was born in LA).
But, I have this fascination with the desert.
“But, LA isn't in the desert”! You may retort.
I know, but it's near it. And my mom has been to the Mojave. Probably a lot of times.
Me, I've never been to the desert. But, my mom doesn't like deserts.
As for myself, I've always lived near either prairie (like my native state of Iowa), or forests (like my home state of South Carolina)
So, the idea of something looks, well, lifeless, is appealing to me. (And yes, I know there is still technically life in the desert).
As I've mentioned before, my mom is of Jewish descent (Confession is biblical), and the fact my ancestors spent forty years in the desert because of disobedience (and the Bible even says as much,
“For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voiced of the LORD: unto whom the LORD sware that he would not shew them the land, which the LORD sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey” (Joshua 5:6). You know, Exodus 16:35 says the following, “And the children of Israel did eat manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat manna until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan”.
I mean, having to eat the same food for forty years seems like to punishment to some people.
Now that I think about it, Jesus choosing to fast in the desert for forty days seems to be kinda the opposite.
I mean, I'm not going to get into Eucharistic theology, if you want that, go here;Paul's Eucharistic theology
But, I think Jesus was showing us, that, sometimes, you need to be able to go without.
We need quiet in our overly stimulated culture. And sometimes, the best way to fight the devil, is head on.
“And there was in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts and the angels ministered unto him”.
(Mark 1:13, please be sure to read the parallels in Matthew and Luke).
