On the first day of every new year, we choose a patron saint for our family, as well as for each individual member. We do this somewhat randomly by using an online "saint name generator" we discovered years ago. We also say a prayer for our special saint to be made known to us. Our 4 children take this very seriously and this has grown to be a fun as well as meaningful spiritual tradition in our family.
As a mother, I also feel an urging to create a new prayer model for myself and our family as we start the new year fresh. I was recently reminded about the long standing apostolate called the Confraternity of Christian Mothers and the beautiful prayers in their book, Mother Love. It's full of wonderful prayers for moms to pray especially for their families and children, and I'm going to make better use of my copy this year!
Below is one such prayer that I will start saying every day for my children:
Mother's Daily Prayer for Children
O Mary, Immaculate Virgin and Sorrowful Mother, commend our beloved children to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Who refuses nothing to His Mother. Holy Guardian Angels, pray for them. St, Joseph, powerful patron, pray for them. St. John, beloved disciple of the Heart of Jesus, pray for them. St. Augustine, pray for them. St. Anthony, pray for them. St. Aloysius, pray for them. St. Anne, mother of Mary, pray for them. St. Elizabeth, pray for them. St. Monica, pray for them.
My Queen, my Mother! I give myself entirely to you, and to show you my devotion to you, I consecrate to you my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart, my entire self. Since I am all yours, O loving Mother, keep me, and protect me as your precious possession. Mary, please help me to be a good mother today and always. Mary, most sorrowful Mother, pray for me and for all our family. St. Joseph, foster father of our Lord Jesus Christ and true spouse of Mary, the Virgin, pray for my husband and me. Amen.
