Our Mother Mary

I'd like to take some time today to introduce you to an organization that, for me, embodies the conclusion of Matthew's gospel:
"Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations...teach them to carry out everything I have commanded you. And know that I am with you always, even until he end of the world!" (Mt. 28:19a, 20)
On March 4, 1920, at the request of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) was born. Over the one hundred years since its founding, this enthusiastic, dedicated group of ladies has committed themselves to fulfilling its mission statement:
"The National Council of Catholic Women works through its members to support, empower, and educate all Catholic women in spirituality, leadership, and service. NCCW programs respond to the needs of the Church and society with Gospel values."
I was introduced to this wonderful organization over thirty years ago when, as a young mother who had just settled into a new parish, I was looking for ways to participate. I was invited to a local Council of Catholic Women meeting (as with most organizations, the heart of NCCW is found in its local organizations). When the time came to elect officers, no one stepped up to fill the office of President. So at one month parish membership, I was installed as parish president. I know it sounds a little crazy; even the outgoing president asked "Are you sure?" But as my two year term ensued, I found no better way to learn about my parish sisters than to "take the plunge".
The beauty of NCCW for me has always been the opportunity to meet others where they stand and accompany them on their Catholic Christian journey. From parish beginnings, I was introduced to women from the area and diocesan levels. I have met and befriended women from all over the country. Even in this time of pandemic, I continue to make new friends from places as far away from my home state of Minnesota as Massachusetts and Idaho, Washington State, and Florida, as well as continue my special friendship with the women of Iowa. I hope to cultivate a friendship with the ladies of Wisconsin as well. So there are many ways to "reach out and touch"; one only has to decide which avenue to choose!
The patron of NCCW is Our Lady of Good Counsel. Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother, all of us branch out to improve the lives of others at the local, state, national and international levels. We provide clothing for the poor, walk with pregnant mothers through our Walking with Moms in Need program, address issues related to human trafficking and domestic violence, abortion, immigration, and environmental concerns as well as many others. We learn of our Catholic faith through scripture study and peering into the lives of the saints. We recite the rosary and live it through our leadership gifts at every level of council. We come to serve others, but also to laugh at each other through special meals and fun games.
We were looking forward to our celebration of 100 years of Council just past August,; unfortunately the pandemic has put that off until August of next year in Virginia. Please come join us! I will be waiting for you. Until then, I leave you with our NCCW prayer to Our Lady of Good Counsel:
God of Heavenly Wisdom, you have given us Mary, Mother of Jesus, to be our guide and counselor. Grant that we always seek her motherly help in this life and so enjoy her blessed presence in the life to come. O Mother of Good Counsel, patroness of the National Council of Catholic Women, intercede for us, that we may be wise, courageous, and loving leaders of the church. Help us, Dear Mother, to know the mind of Jesus, your Son. May the Holy Spirit fill us with reverence for God's creation, and compassion for all God's children.
May our labors of love on earth enhance the reign of God and may God's gifts of faith and living hope prepare us for of the world to come. Amen
