Have I Loved My Husband Well?
Dear friends,
What kind of mother are you? Are you a gentle mother, one who moves with quiet patience, attuned to the tender rhythms of her children, offering calm correction and choosing connection over punishment? Or are you a crunchy mother, drawn to the beauty of the natural world, nourishing your little ones with care, delighting in simplicity, and tending to your home with intention?
Perhaps you are a Type A mother, steady and composed, your days ordered with precision, your home moving with a quiet, steady rhythm beneath your care. Or perhaps you are something else entirely… a kind of mother not yet named, or “trending.”
I am not entirely certain what kind of mother I am. But I know what I long for. I desire to be a mother shaped after Holy Mother Church, steadfast and tender, faithful in the quiet work of guiding souls.
Have you ever heard the Church spoken of as a mother? I had heard the phrase before, soft and lovely upon the ear, yet I had not lingered with it. It seemed, at the time, a beautiful title for the ancient Church, a poetic name… and nothing more.
But now, as a mother of five, with the naivety of my younger years gently behind me, I understand Holy Mother Church in a deeper way. She is, in truth, a mother, and the most pure example of one.
Let me share how I have come to understand this.
1. Holy Mother Church Gives Birth to New Life
Through Baptism, Holy Mother Church does not merely welcome us, she brings us into new life. Like a mother in quiet labor, she bears her children not of flesh, but of water and Spirit, drawing them into the life of God. At these sacred waters, the soul is washed and made new, no longer bound to what was, but clothed in grace.
She receives us as her own, not because we have earned it, but because she has been entrusted with this work by Christ Himself. In her, we are not simply gathered. We are born into a life that reaches beyond this world.
2. She Nourishes Her Children
A mother does not only give birth. She feeds and sustains. Holy Mother Church does the same, tending to her children with quiet care.
She nourishes them with what is holy, most especially through the Eucharist, where she places into their hands not mere bread, but Christ Himself, given again and again for the strengthening of the soul. She teaches through her wisdom and sustains through the sacraments, meeting her children in their weakness and in their longing.
Like a devoted mother, she watches over them as they grow, feeding them when they are weary and guiding them when they are unsure.
3. She Teaches and Forms
A mother forms her children in truth and love, shaping not only what they know, but who they become. Holy Mother Church does the same, leading her children along the path that leads to life.
She teaches what is true, even when it is difficult, not to burden, but to free. Her voice remains steady, rooted in Christ. She forms the conscience with care, helping her children discern what leads them home.
Her discipline has purpose, like a mother who corrects in order to guide. Through this quiet shaping, her children are slowly made into who they were meant to be.
4. She Corrects and Disciplines
True motherhood includes correction. A mother who loves does not leave her child to wander without guidance, but calls them back when they stray.
Holy Mother Church corrects in the same way, not with harshness, but with a love that seeks the good of the soul. When she names sin, it is not to shame, but to awaken and to turn her children toward what heals.
She does not grow weary in this. Even when her children resist, she continues to speak truth with patience, guiding them toward life.
5. She Intercedes and Protects
A mother stands between her children and danger, often in ways unseen. Holy Mother Church does not leave her children unguarded, but surrounds them with care that is both gentle and firm.
She intercedes for them without ceasing, lifting their needs before God. In her prayers, there is a kind of shelter over her children as they move through a world that does not always love what is good.
She guards truth, protecting her children from what would mislead them. Like a mother keeping watch in the night, she remains near, attentive and faithful.
6. She Loves Unconditionally
Even when her children rebel, Holy Mother Church does not cease to be their mother. She does not withdraw her love, but remains patient, waiting.
Though her children may wander far, she does not forget them. She holds them within her heart, ready to receive them again with mercy.
Her love is not indifferent. It is faithful. Like a mother who keeps a light burning, she waits with hope, trusting that her children will find their way home.
The title “Holy Mother Church” is not merely poetic. It is ancient, spoken across centuries and rooted deeply in Scripture and Tradition. It is not distant, but living, active, and quietly forming those who belong to her.
It sets before me an example of the kind of mother I long to become.
With the Church as my guide, I begin each day in prayer, asking the Lord to shape my heart. To make me a mother who gives life with tenderness, who nourishes with what is good, who teaches with patience, who corrects with care, who protects what has been entrusted to her, and who loves with faithfulness.
A mother who leads her children toward Him.
So I will ask you again,
What kind of mother are you?
Are you a gentle mother, a structured mother, a soft mother…
a black SUV mother or a white SUV mother…
a woman shaped by preference, personality, and passing names?
Or are you becoming something deeper?
Are you striving to be a mother who gives life, who forms, who remains faithful even when it is difficult?
Not perfect, but faithful.
Not shaped by the world, but by something that endures.
And perhaps the question is not only what kind of mother you are…
but what kind of mother you are allowing yourself to become.
Who are you becoming, in the quiet of your home,
in the unseen moments,
in the small, daily offerings no one else will notice?
Because this is where motherhood is truly formed.
With Love,
Ophelia
