The Art of Merciful Firmness
By Katie Zalany
The world tells you to be harsh. The Bible tells you to be merciful. Which do you follow? I wrestled with this for some time. I'm a middle manager in a corporate environment and am sometimes faced with the situation of: Do I be merciful or do I be hard on this person?

Young Adult Leadership in the Church
By Katie Zalany
I recently was asked to participate in a research study on young adult experiences of leadership in the Catholic Church in our diocese. It got me reflecting on those experiences.

Prayer is needed! It always has been, but we have let it slip for too long.
By Troy Kroening
Prayer itself is a spiritual battle. “Oh come on, a spiritual battle?” Yes. If we realize that there is a God and there is a Devil, then there is a battle. Obviously, not a physical one, though it can spill into the physical, especially in us who are spiritual and physical beings at the same time.

The Simple Gospel
By Katie Zalany
Have you ever met someone who emulated the simple truths of the Gospel? I have found that in a new Catholic friend who happens to have a disability, but is higher functioning. One of the greatest gifts he has given me is his witness to the Simple Gospel.

Pray with your whole heart!
By Troy Kroening
Do you want to move mountains? Well, you can. “Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” – [Matthew 17:20] Jesus’ disciples wondered why they could not drive a demon from a boy. He rebukes the demon and when the disciples ask why they could not, He tells t

The Sweet Sound of Silence
By Katie Zalany
One of the fruits of this time of COVID in my life has been the increasing comfort with silence. Noise feels noisier these days. Song, media and noise used to be a consistent way I heard God, but nowadays, I spend more time in the silence of life, listening to that whisper and enjoying His presence.

Are you as courageous as the signers of the Declaration of Independence?
By Troy Kroening
Back at the time of the Declaration of Independence, the signers became the most wanted men. The British wanted to make an example of these men. The signers knew this. John Hancock’s large signature seemed to be a taunt to the British; “come and get me”. These men had courage and lived in hope that their courage could overcome tyranny.

Hate is not your friend. It will only destroy you.
By Troy Kroening
Hating a hateful person is also hate. Many of us feel justified in our hate because we are only hating the hateful people. You know, them. But hate will get us nowhere. We all know this. Yet hate stirs up within us. It starts as anger and then gets twisted into hate. Anger towards a wrong, like hate, is justified. But allowing anger to become hate itself worse; we now have more hate.

"Are there any Winners in the Church because of Covid-19?"
By Ralph Hathaway
A very rhetorical question that should be on the minds of each one. You can walk or drive by most Catholic Churches and notice signs informing that this building is closed. The devastation of an unseen, and for the most part a confusing entity, has held all of us hostage. This event has affected the world’s population and no one appears to be safe.

How can we make it through this?
By Troy Kroening
With this current pandemic and the chaos in our country, it seems too much for us to confront. Our lives can feel that way sometimes without a pandemic or nationwide chaos. We can feel like we are sinking in the sea. But we need to focus on what, or more specifically Who, has conquered the chaos in our lives. Just as Jesus can rebuke the winds, He can conquer the troubles in our lives too.

Gratefully "Into the Wild Blue Yonder"
By Sr. Christina M. Neumann
In doing a little research for this post, I realized that the titular phrase refers to air rather than water, being from the air force hymn. Oh well, for some reason, this patriotic song popped into mind while I was swimming this afternoon. (I suppose a musical program from the recent Fourth of July holiday probably had something to do with it.)

What God Speaks in Your Losses
By Katie Zalany
Last Friday I received an email, and it grasped my heart. In it were these beautiful messages: God still desires to heal you. God still is present to you. God still is with you.

Who is God?
By Amelia Monroe Carlson
A mother was baking cookies in her kitchen when her 5-year-old daughter’s voice cut through the smell of chocolate chip. “Mom?” “Yes?”, the mother replied, expecting the child to ask for a cookie. “Who is God?”

The Root of Evil
By Amelia Monroe Carlson
The world around us is dark. Between COVID restrictions and regulations, protests, riots, vandalism, and destruction of religious statues, it seems the world gets darker with each day. If you dare to turn on the news it could seem like all the good in the world is a surfer who is about to be drowned by a tsunami sized wave in the ocean. There are questions that seem to be screaming for answers.

The Catholic Church—Saying "NO" to a World Screaming "YES"
By Larry Peterson
How did the precepts of ethics and morality, based on the Ten Commandments and the "Golden Rule", become a pariah to so many? How did these principles ever become inverted? Why have they seemingly been tossed by many into the dumpster of the outdated and irrelevant?

By Elizabeth Thomas
A common greeting we hear almost everyday, and most of us probably will reply, "Nothing's new---same ole daily stuff. That is not TRUE--every moment of everyday is NEW!!
