I believe that Vladimir Putin "gets it" because he sees in his country and Europe the effects of the culture of death. I saw these effects in 2002 when I went to the Ukraine on a church mission trip....abortion was very common in that each woman had an average of 6-7 abortions. However, the western world has been buying into the culture of death at least since 1798 when Rev. Thomas Malthus wrote an essay on the Principle of Population. Malthus was influenced by his father, who believed in the perfectability of the human race. Malthus believed that unchecked population growth is exponential, while the growth of the food supply was limited. Thus, large families bring about poverty, and are undesirable people who take away scarce resources.
Darwin was influenced by Malthus and his theory of evolution, leading him to theorize that organisms (people) with a relative advantage in the struggle for survival, would be able to pass their strong characteristics on to future generations.....survival of the fittest. So, get rid of the least desirable so they will not continue to infect the gene pool. He saw negros and ethnic groups, basically anyone except white European males, as undesirable for the "gene pool". Hitler was influenced by Darwin's theory and wanted to eliminate "undesirable" people such as Jews, gypsies, and handicapped people.
Margaret Sanger, Founder of Planned Parenthood was also influenced by Hitler and Darwin and saw large families as a source of poverty and a source of unhappiness in society. Thus, she popularized and advocated the use of birth control methods and abortion as a remedy to large families and ethnic groups that were undesirable for the gene-pool, (ie. negros and all ethnic classes of people). Before the 1930's, all forms of birth control were seen as illicit and immoral by all Catholics and Protestants. Sanger brought Malthus's theory, Darwin]s theory, and Hitler's theory into our present age with Planned Parenthood clinics in low income and ethnic neighborhoods.
Politicians today, such as Nancy Pelosi, publically state that abortion is a remedy to poverty, and see unwanted children as a drain on our nation's resources. The Church stands in opposition to all of this and sees God as creator and sustainer of all life and resources. He is the creator of life, all races and creeds, and does not wish to eliminate people due to the :perceived" lack of strong genes, the color of your skin, your disabilities, your income, or your old age. All of these theories and misconceptions were appropriately labeled by Saint John Paul II as "The Culture of Death". It is the pervasive world view that we live in today, and it is what Vladimir Putin and all of Western civilization must deal with if we are to have future generations.
Where does the truth lie? We must ask ourselves this question and be rigorous in looking for the truth. For more information on this subject, I would recommend reading, "Architects of the Culture of Death" by Benjamin Wiker and Donald DeMarch, PhD.
