Me With You My Dear Jesus

Many people talk about the numerous issues that arise with the arrival of immigrants, such as challenges related to housing, employment, and many more. Have you ever thought about the immigrant as a person and their needs?
Let me tell you about the first hardship one encounters as an immigrant: friendship. Many newly arrived immigrants have no friends or family to greet them and offer help when they reach our country. Yet, the friendship, smile and guidance that we can offer can make a big difference in the lives of those newly arrived. Let's not forget that your parents or grandparents took that big leap of faith when they emigrated too - they would have probably appreciated a kind smile and a helping hand.
Let's show those that are new to our country that we are people of good hearts by welcoming them into our schools, stores, recreational centres and everywhere we go. They will be very thankful for your kindness - I say this from experience. Any help that is given to newly arrived immigrants can help them settle into their new home. They might be able to better find their own path and goals in their new lives, contributing to the growth and enrichment of our own society and country.
So, here's a dare: this week, engage with someone whose first language is not English and offer them your smile. If they ask, give them some advice on their new cities and neighbours. Believe me, you will brighten your own day!
