When I first read the title to this book, I was taken back. I thought how is the author, Tommy Tighe, going to make Catholic’s look hip? Catholic are usually construed as boring and dull. How is he going to show our Catholic cool side? History! We have tons of saints that have passed through this world and Tighe, along with his friends who helped him write this book, has pulled out the coolest and weirdest ones to discover. Each Chapter mentions a cool saint and a forgotten prayer. You will be excited to get to the end of each chapter because there is an activity to do, try, or think about. I find them Catholic cool and interesting. This book is not just for women but men as well. Men, you will enjoy the chapter about the beard. You will feel compelled to grow out your beard and shun the neat shaven ways of today!
My husband always liked to wear sandals. I have always told him they look like Jesus shoes. But I never looked at them with a biblical perspective. As Mary Rezac wrote, “There’s also something about the sandal that’s biblical, that implies a pilgrimage. They help you channel your inner apostle, so you can be like the ones whom Jesus sent out wearing sandals and just one tunic. They imply simplicity of spirit and allow you to easily slip out of them if you encounter holy ground.” I never thought about it quite like this. I always just thought about how they were out of fashion.
Do you yearn to spread the Good News of the Gospel? The author believes the best way to get to the hearts of others is through food, sports, and even beer. Yes, I said Beer! Breweries are great places to evangelize. The best conversations do happen in a pub or bar after all. And did you know that Catholic monks make some of the best beers in the world? If monk’s making draft beer isn’t hipster, I don’t know what is!
This book is not only for practicing Catholics, but for new Catholics, or those thinking about joining the Catholic faith. You may want to know what the appeal is. Well this book describes it well. Catholic are hipster cool!
