A Letter to Today’s Teens and their Parents from a Catholic Mom…

As you may be aware (or maybe it has caught you by surprise), Lent for 2017, is March 1st. I've been thinking about what I and my family will be doing for Lent and I was reminded of a homily I heard a few years back.
The priest talked about the importance of giving up something that was truly difficult for us, not something trivial or that we’ll be going back to as soon as Lent was over. Something that will make us better people, stretch our sensibilities, yes - make us suffer a little. He also spoke of doing. This was something new to me. I mean the idea of it. He said sometimes Lent isn't all about giving up something, but it can also be about “doing” something proactive, good for our souls, good for our families and communities. I suppose the sacrifice is time and perhaps not going to that concert, movie, game, playing video games or being on a tablet.
I have a large family and we just moved into a new home. To say things are a little unorganized is an understatement, but every day we are finding our way. Lent, I decided would be the perfect opportunity to help us re-prioritize our time and family life. So here are a few things we will be “doing” during Lent, (at least we’ll be trying very hard to make these goals happen).
Making time to pray the rosary together as a family, daily.
Choosing an Adoration time and sticking to it.
Going to Confession regularly.
Participating in church activities, supporting our church in this way, such as attending the “Shadow Puppet Stations of the Cross” put on by our Y-Disciples.
Inviting our priest and Deacon over for dinner.
I feel like more than five things and we’ll get overwhelmed, but these are all doable and important for growing in faith and love. It's not going to be easy at first. I'm sure there will be grumbling over missed shows, screen-time or alone time. However, Lent is an important time and a great time to feed your soul with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, for reflection, action and repentance.
Maybe my list will give you some ideas and re-evaluate how you will best use the Lenten Season.
What will you be “doing” for Lent?
