Why I'm Catholic
Before we get started, please be sure to read my previous article here, it's Fire, and, please, check out my latest on Locals; The CD comeback. And, here, remember, I wrote a book, you can find out more about that, here and here
So, as a follow up to my weirdly popular article, I thought I would write this.
Those who don't come from a liturgical Christian background might be surprised to know this, but, as of my writing this, it's still Easter. And, since it's I have an article about the problems with referring to funerals as “celebrations of life”. I really wish I knew why it's popular. Like, I'm glad it is, but, I have articles that I think are much more important. I'm glad that it resonates with y'all. And now, on to the cheery topic of death.
So, y'all know that. I think maybe I should explain what I DO think we should have at funerals.
“Now God hath raised up the Lord, and will raise us up by his power.
Know you not that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? God forbid” (1 Corinthians 6:14-15).” There's more, but, y'all can read it in context on your own.
But, what does this have to do with funerals? Well, that would be a good homily or sermon or whatever you want to call it on the communion of Saints.
What about this?
“And therefore we also having so great a cloud of witnesses over our head, laying aside every weight and sin which surrounds us, let us run by patience to the fight proposed to us;
Looking on Jesus, the author and finisher of faith, who having set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and now sitteth on the round of God” (Hebrews 12:1-2).
By the way, make sure you read Hebrews 11 before that, because it talks about the importance of the Old Testament Saints.
I think a sermon or homily during a funeral, should be about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the hope we have for heaven.
Sorry for not having a massive tome this time.
