"Scars are windows through which God's light pours" -St Kateri Tekakwitha
St Gianna Beretta Molla (1922-1962)
Piety and Promise
St Gianna Beretta Molla entered the world as a tenth child in a home where prayer shaped purpose, and charity shaped character. Alberto and Maria Beretta raised their 13 children; to love God with sincerity and serve others with joy. One sister embraced the cloister; two brothers became priests, including her beloved Fr. Enrico. In this atmosphere of humble holiness, St Gianna learned early; that faith is not merely a concept — it is an action.
Study and Service
During college, St Gianna joined the St. Vincent de Paul Society; offering comfort to the elderly, and care to the poor. She dreamed of becoming a missionary physician alongside her Fr. Enrico in Brazil, so she pursued surgery and pediatric medicine in Milan. Though her health prevented missionary travel, she trusted God to redirect her life. She graduated from the University of Pavia in 1949 and opened a clinic in Mero in 1952. Medicine became her ministry.
Healing and Holiness
Drawn to kids, St Gianna returned to school to learn specialized care for mothers and children. She treated each person with gentle dignity and joyful mercy, seeing Christ in every fragile life. Active in Catholic Action and an avid skier; she was a bright, balanced spirit. Her clinic was a place where science met sanctity, and where hurting hearts were met by healing hands.
Marriage and Mission
Though she considered religious life, God introduced her to Signor Pietro Molla; an engineer whose steady kindness matched her radiant generosity. They married on 24 September 1955 in Magenta, Italy. Their home was a haven of prayer, laughter and purpose. As a mother of 3, St Gianna continued her medical practice, which she considered a grace from God and a gift to others. She believed motherhood was a collaboration with our Creator.
Courage and Cross
During her 4th and final pregnancy, St Gianna was diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst. She insisted: “If you must choose between me and the child, save the child.” Her choices were stark:
Trusting Jesus with unwavering peace, she insisted upon the second. Both mother and child survived the surgery, but septic peritonitis claimed St Gianna’s life -- 7 days later. She died surrendering everything to God. Her daughter — the child she died to save — is a physician and international pro-life advocate today.
Mission and Miracles
This saint's sanctity was not sudden — it was the fruit of small, steady yes's to God. On 16 May 2004, Pope John Paul II canonized St Gianna Beretta Molla. One of her miracles involved a baby who dry-gestated without amniotic fluid, sustained by constant prayer for Gianna’s intercession to God. Her legacy continues to inspire physicians, mothers and all who defend the dignity of life. Today, she passes her torch to us, to continue this quest. How?
In a love letter to her husband Pietro, St Gianna wrote, "Love is the most beautiful sentiment that the Lord has put into the soul of men and women." She concludes in thanksgiving: God blessed her with a loving husband, 4 babies, and everything she ever wanted ... Now, she has eternal life. Her feast day is 4/28. St Gianna Molla, pray for us!
