Our Mother Mary
Are you familiar with the Book of Proverbs? It is a book in the Old Testament filled with wisdom and instruction, written to form the heart and guide a life well lived.
It ends with a portrait of a woman of worth.
In Book of Proverbs 31, Scripture shows us that while there may be many kinds of “good” women, one stands above the rest. She is described as more precious than rubies. She is careful with what she has been given, attentive to her home, and faithful in the care of those entrusted to her. Her life is not passive. She contributes. She builds. She brings stability and honor to her household and to her husband.
The standard is not unclear. It is direct and it is meaningful.
But what does that woman look like in the year 2026?
1. She is faithful with what has been entrusted to her
In Book of Proverbs 31:11–12 we read, “Her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.”
In our time, this kind of woman is thoughtful and steady with the resources placed in her care. She understands that what belongs to the household is something to be handled with love and responsibility. Whether the income comes from him, from her, or from both, she treats it with care.
She is not careless with spending, nor is she driven by impulse. Instead, she is intentional. She chooses wisely, knowing that her decisions affect the peace and stability of her home.
A husband can rest in her judgment because she seeks what is good, not only in small moments, but over the course of a lifetime. In this way, she quietly brings good into his life, not loss, and builds something lasting within her home.
2. She uses her hands with purpose and skill
In Book of Proverbs 31:13 we read, “She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands.”
This woman is not idle. She is thoughtful about what she takes on, and she applies herself with care. The verse speaks of wool and flax, but it is not limiting a woman to one kind of work. It gives us a picture of diligence and intention.
Today, this can look like many things. A woman may sew, create, organize, build, teach, or manage what has been placed in her care. The form may change, but the heart behind it does not.
She does not neglect her abilities. She uses them. She develops them. She offers them for the good of her home and those around her.
There is something very beautiful about a woman who works with willing and skillful hands, not out of pressure, but out of love.
3. She rises with care for those she loves
In Book of Proverbs 31:15 we read, “She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household.”
This is a woman who carries a quiet devotion to her home. She is attentive to the needs around her, and she prepares ahead so that those she loves are cared for.
In today’s world, this can look different from home to home. It may be the mother who wakes before the house stirs to prepare breakfast or pack lunches. It may be a wife who rises a little earlier to set out coffee or begin the day with intention, easing the burden her husband carries.
The heart of it is not simply rising early. It is a spirit of care. She thinks ahead. She makes room for others to be supported and at peace.
There is something deeply beautiful in a woman who orders her day with love, quietly tending to her home in ways that often go unseen, yet are deeply felt.
4. She is thoughtful and wise in her decisions
In Book of Proverbs 31:16 we read, “She considers a field and buys it; from her earnings she plants a vineyard.”
This is a woman who does not act hastily. She takes time to consider, to discern, and then she moves with confidence. She is both careful and capable, making decisions that are rooted in wisdom and intention.
In today’s world, this may look like a woman who manages her resources well, who plans for the future, and who invests her time and efforts into things that will grow. It may be in the home, in a small business, in a skill she is developing, or in opportunities she prayerfully chooses.
She understands that what she builds today can bear fruit tomorrow. So she works patiently, trusting that small, faithful efforts will grow into something lasting.
There is something very steady and beautiful about a woman who chooses wisely and then tends what she has chosen with care.
5. She carries herself with quiet strength
In Book of Proverbs 31:17 we read, “She girds herself with strength and makes her arms strong.”
This is a woman who does not shrink from what is before her. She prepares herself, not only outwardly, but inwardly. There is a steadiness about her, a quiet resolve that allows her to meet the needs of her day.
In today’s world, this kind of strength may look like endurance, patience, or self discipline. It may be the strength to continue when the day feels long, or the strength to remain gentle when it would be easier to grow weary.
She does not rely on passing feelings. She chooses to be firm, to be capable, and to grow stronger over time.
There is something deeply reassuring about a woman who carries this kind of strength. It is not loud or forceful. It is steady, faithful, and quietly unshakable.
6. She finds joy in the fruit of her labor
In Book of Proverbs 31:18 we read, “She sees that her work is profitable; her lamp does not go out at night.”
This is a woman who is attentive to what she is building. She recognizes the good that comes from her efforts, and she allows herself to take quiet satisfaction in it. There is a sense of purpose in her work, and it bears fruit over time.
In today’s world, this may look like a woman who takes care in what she does, whether in her home, her work, or the small responsibilities of daily life. She remains present to it. She follows through. She does not abandon what has been placed in her hands.
Her lamp not going out speaks to a steady devotion. She remains faithful, even when the work is unseen or the hours are long. There is a quiet perseverance in her that keeps her going.
There is something very comforting about a woman who tends her life this way, with consistency, care, and a heart that remains engaged in the good she is cultivating.
7. She gives herself faithfully to her work
In Book of Proverbs 31:19 we read, “She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle.”
This is a woman who is present in her work. She does not avoid it or rush past it. She applies herself with care, giving attention even to the small and ordinary tasks.
The distaff and spindle were tools of her time, but the meaning reaches far beyond them. It shows a woman who is willing to labor with her own hands, to take part in the work that sustains her home.
Today, this may look like tending to daily responsibilities, completing tasks with care, or quietly keeping things in order. It is not always glamorous, and it is not always seen, but it is meaningful.
There is something very beautiful about a woman who embraces her work with a willing heart, knowing that even the simplest acts, done with care, help to build a life of peace and stability.
8. She is open-handed and compassionate

This is a woman whose care extends beyond her own home. She notices those in need and responds with generosity, not reluctance.
In today’s world, this may look like giving, serving, or simply being attentive to others who are struggling. It can be expressed in quiet ways, through kindness, time, or provision.

There is something very comforting about a woman who creates a sense of security through her attentiveness and preparation.
10. She carries herself with dignity

This is a woman who values beauty and dignity. She takes care in how she presents herself and the space around her.

Do you recognize yourself in any of these?
Perhaps in some places you do, and in others you feel a little far off. That is alright. This is not meant to be a measure that leaves you discouraged, but a guide that gently calls you forward.
Is this something we are meant to grow into, or is this woman simply set apart?
