Make that New Year's resolution
You have to admit that we have all been "Saul" at one time or another. Making our Lord call us by name to awaken the Spirit within us. Here Saul was. Killing and persecuting Christians, even to the point of being responsible for the cruel murdering of Saint Stephen, a beloved Disciple, and Saint.
Sometimes the harsh reality of being put flat on our back is the only way God can get our attention. It surely was for Saint Paul. Literally. Knocking him off of his horse to lay their terrified of the majestic voice coming from the heavens.
Our trials lay us flat out. If we pray for God to show us the way, he removes the scales from our eyes so that we can see from which we were blinded to, just like Saul. We pick ourselves up and like Saint Paul says, "our spirits are willing but the flesh is weak". We must strive to have both the Spirit and the flesh unite, to fulfill the lesson God tries to teach us.
St Paul, as Saul, was weak, yet he conquered that weakness daily by resolving to keep running the great race. We can do it too! We must pray to Saint Paul for strength and guidance to shed our " Saul" selves, and enter into the "Paul" self, that we were all destined to be.
