Modern media feels like ocean waves slamming us unaware, salt in the eyes and all.
Attempting to shape our opinions, slants and angles alter the fullness of truth. Catholics are called to cultivate clarity, tether our tongues and let God guide our gaze. Matthew 12:36 says we will be held accountable for every idle word. Communication, based on its root, is for communing. Words are to witness what is real and not what is loud. Below are 5 concerns in today’s media paired with prayer to anchor our hearts in heated moments.
1. Fear. Many outlets magnify chaos and conflict, to create atmospheres of anxiety. For example, the sky is falling--so buy gold!
- Matthew 6: 19-21 says we are not to store up treasures on earth.
- Prudence suggests keeping 3 days of food/supplies handy. In the Old Testament, God provided daily manna and quail in the desert. Hoarding falls under the 7-deadly sins of greed and gluttony, by mistrusting God. Our Father, provides our daily bread.
- Prayer: Lord of Peace, steady our spirits amid shouting sensationalism. Grant us patient perceptions so we witness the world from Your eyes.
2. Fractured Truths
- False witness and claims spread with careless speed, weakening trust and widening divisions.
- St Philip Neri compares gossip to shaking a goose feather pillow from a roof. "Just as these feathers are beyond recover, so too are our words."
- Prayer: God of Truth, guard our minds from distorted details. Strengthen our leaders to use their words with accuracy and honesty.
3. Digital Cruelty
- Online hangouts reward sharp sarcasm and casual contempt with "likes and follows." Only Jesus is our judge.
- Jesus tells us to love our neighbors. All souls were made by God and His children are not targets.
- Prayer: Merciful Father, soften our speech and shape our hearts. Help us honor every person in our comments with temperance and mindful restraint.
4. Exploiting the Weak and Wounded
- Some media profits from public pain, turning suffering into spectacle. Participation is a temptation.
- Chat responses if any, should involve comfort, prayer and support to redirect straying conversations.
- Prayer: Protector of the vulnerable, shield those exposed to careless coverage. Inspire us to respond with quiet compassion and courage.
5. Distraction/Dulling our Souls
- Constant content creates spiritual static. Just because we can doesn't mean we should.
- Silence is where we best find God. He aches for our attention.
- Prayer: Holy Spirit, clear the clutter that crowds our attention. Draw us back into Your stillness to seek Your gentle guidance.
Pathway to Peace
God never shifts in our world filled with restless voices and rushed narratives. Noises may arise, but grace keeps us grounded. Christ speaks in the silence, the spaces; the pauses, our breath between phrases and moments of honest reflection. When the headlines feel heavy, we are held by a God who is never hurried. Even the smallest prayer, moves through noise like a lantern in a storm, lighting our path to peace.
