St. Andrew Novena
Hollywood mourned the loss of Chuck Norris, an actor who reached peak masculinity with many roles in action films. Norris made a name for himself in the 1980s with the Missing in Action trilogy, but he was also a part of a film that was considered a “Fairy Tale of Retribution” in 1986, the Delta Force.
Delta Force follows a group of elite commandos who rescue hostages in Lebanon from a hijacked airliner en route to Rome. The film highlights fighting evil and protecting the innocent.
The film has some characters to highlight that tie into the themes
Scott McCoy
The second in command of the team, McCoy returned to action after leaving following the botched attempt to free hostages in Iran. McCoy, played by the late Chuck Norris personified peak manhood. Of course, Norris was the subject of viral, hilarious memes with some tying into his iconic films during his acting career.
McCoy showed us toughness and tenacity to take the lead when it comes to completing the objective. He even ensured that the terrorists responsible for the hijacking would be found and brought to military justice.
Fr. William O’Malley
Yes, there was a Catholic priest in the film. Fr. O’Malley gave us spiritual support in the film. In one scene, he would try to correct the terrorist who thought Americans bombed Beirut when conversing with three members of the Navy on that flight. Fr. O’Malley would be attacked, but he never retaliated.
Father O’Malley would jump up to be held captive as they were near Beirut. Abdul, the film’s main antagonist, agreed to take him hostage. Fr. O’Malley is seen in the film remaining calm in the midst of tribulation.
By the end of the film, Fr. O’Malley gave the last rites to a member of the commando team who laid down his life to accomplish the mission of rescuing the hostages.
Nick Alexander
The leader of the commando unit, Col. Nick Alexander, coordinates the successful mission to liberate the hostages.
Alexander was quiet in most of the film, but he was decisive in making his actions speak. When he received news of additional terrorists on the plane, he ensured no one got killed. He had confidence in his men, which made the difference in completing the objective at hand.
Delta Force is a battle between good and evil. It is an action film that has lived on in cinema history.
I give it a 4 out of 5. It is violent. Some language.
