NEGOTIATING HELL: a sequel to CS Lewis' "Screwtape Letters." Ch 10 - Bail-out Prayers
Judas’s betrayal of Jesus was a grave sin. We know this because the text, "better had he not be born" was written in Matthew 26:24. Ergo, did Jesus give Judas Holy Communion at the Last Supper? No one knows for sure. Both Western and Eastern father disagree. However, here are their theories if Judas received.
1. NO. In John 13, Judas leaves the last supper before Jesus commences the first Holy Mass.
2. YES. In the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke), Judas is present during both the meal and Eucharist. Furthermore, Luke clocks Judas's kiss after the consecration of Holy Eucharist. After the Eucharist in Luke 22:21–23, Jesus says, “Behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table.” This is why many Eastern Fathers say Judas received the Eucharist from the hand of Jesus.
Summary
Did Judas receive Holy Communion from Jesus' hand in the state of mortal sin? You decide. No matter what happened, Christ respected Judas’s free will, just as he respects our free will until the time of our judgement. Below are the church fathers' responses to the title question.
No -- John: Judas leaves before anything like the Eucharist happens.
No -- Augustine & Aquinas: Judas did not receive (follows John).
Yes -- Matthew: Betrayal is announced, then the Eucharist; Judas is not said to leave.
Yes -- Mark: Same as Matthew; Judas is not said to leave.
Yes -- Luke: Eucharist is followed by the betrayer’s hand on the table — Judas is clearly still there.
Yes -- Chrysostom & Cyril: Say Judas did receive (follows Luke).
