Let's get salty!
Before we get started, please read my previous article, here; God on the cross, and check out my latest on...Rumble?! Youtube censors pro-lifers, and, don't forget, I wrote a book; Elisabeth and the other man (paperback) Elisabeth and the other man (ebook)
“And Jesus, answering, said to them:
They that are whole, need not the physician: but they that are sick.
I came not to call the just, but sinners to penance 5:31-32).
The reason that I was even able to find these verses, is because I have a red letter Douay Rheims Bible.
This might come as a surprise to some of y'all, but I do see as well as, maybe some of you reading this.
There are multiple reasons for this.
I have a severe astigmatism in my right eye. I have damage from surviving a chlorine gas spill that killed nine people (Survivor's guilt (6 January 2005))
I understand why some people might take issue with the red letter Bibles.
But, being someone who can't see very well (it's also worth noting that I have probable brain damage), I see this as a very positive thing.
Having said that, I have heard (anecdotally), that there are some people that say that we need to only follow the words of Jesus in red.
Obviously, I have a problem with that.
I also have a problem with some publishers having Jesus's words in red only in the gospels. The Bible I used has them in red in both the gospels and Acts, but, not in Revelation, which I think is an oversight.
No argument from me that the Book of Revelation is highly symbolic, but, if it's something Jesus said, show Jesus saying it!
But, here's the thing, finding Jesus's words in red helps me find what he's responding to.
Now, let's read Luke 5:30,
“But the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying to his disciple: Why do you eat and drink with Publicans and sinners”?
Now, I understand what the words in red are about. Some people may divorce them from their context, but people do that with all kinds of things in the Bible.
From the top of my head, so many people, because of their zeal to "prove" the Protestant doctrine of "Faith alone", will quote Ephesians 2:8-9, but leave out verse 10, even though v. 10 which gives the context,
(for those that are curious; Ephesians 2:8-10), it seems to me that people would do that anyway. So, I don't think that's unique to red letter Bibles.
I'm vision impaired, it just worked better for me. And that's all there is to it. Most of my Bibles don't have the words of Jesus in red, but neither do most Bible publishers not understand that 10 pt font is not large print.
So, we've still got a long way to go when it comes to Bible publishing.
But going after red letter Bibles?
Do better, y'all.
