A poem on the Holy Face of Jesus
The Shema, is the central foundational prayer in Judaism. Declaring the oneness of God and the obligation to love Him with all one's heart, soul, and might. Recited daily it begins with "hear O Israel, The Lord is Our God, the Lord is One". It emphasizes devotion, teaching and obedience to the Covenant.
The meaning of the word "Shema" is Hebrew for "hear", " listen", or "pay attention". It comes from Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and Numbers 15: 37-41, in the Bible. It's ritual use is recited twice daily, (morning and evening) and is considered the final words spoken before death. The core message emphasizes, "you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength." It is often recited with the hands over the eyes to focus on the meaning of the words.
What a beautiful ritual to incorporate into our daily and nightly prayers! It especially goes well with the Gospels in this week's readings.
So simple to say to such a great and powerful God as ours.
You, oh Lord are our God! The Lord is One! I tell you this Almighty Father, with all of my heart and soul and might!
