Why Not Just Pray Directly to God?
Between pills and surgery, abortion kills more than a third of the population of human beings God creates, who are destined to be born. While these numbers are a shock to the system, many people can't fathom a world without the “safety net” of abortion because they’ve been formed in a sexual revolution post-Christian society that normalizes fornication (sex outside of marriage).
Why was there no uproar while abortion was banned for a century after modern science discovered that human beings begin at conception? Because there is no demand for abortion when people recognize two fundamental principles of civilization: 1) sex is for marriage and must wait until marriage, and 2) innocent human life must never be intentionally killed.
The common psychological pattern witnessed in western nations abandoning Christ is that once you deny the first principle you will inevitably deny the second. No society relaxes its norms on premarital sex without legalizing abortion. That's because a fornication society demands abortion: pregnancy becomes a "mistake" that needs to be 'fixed' in the skewed mind. Once a culture rationalizes sex separated from babies (contraception) and sex separated from marriage (fornication) – the psyche goes into defense mode to deaden the conscience and rationalize the killing its natural end: offspring.
The bottom line is that every society must choose to either follow the natural law by respecting both marriage and human life, or follow the law of selfishness that respects neither. These moral tenets come in pairs. We must either choose our intentions over human nature's, making us the arbiters of morality, or choose human nature's ends over ours, which natural law recognizes as the will of God. Sex by its very nature permanently bonds two people while potentially creating a third. This paradigm of persons proceeding from love is the family imaging the Trinity: a permanent and exclusive communion of persons united by love.
In imaging the Trinitarian God, the flow of unimpeded love between spouses overflows to create a family. With fornicators in "relationships", however, love is counterfeit since it is impeded from reaching its natural end and is without a permanent covenant. Disrespecting the natural order of marriage, sex, and children results in chaos, heartbreak, and addiction. We cannot evade these consequences to our human nature.
There is a reason the Church teaches as she does; and hypothetically you don't have to be religious to understand it. However, living in a fallen society geared toward creating wounded obsessed consumers, grace is necessary to see through all the fog and counterculturally live the truth.
To those who much has been given, much is expected. With sacred moral doctrine and the sacraments of Confession and Communion, Catholics have a special obligation to spread the truth that sets us free in a world that militates against it. There can be no happiness in circumventing the natural order ordained by God. As Mother Teresa once said, Christ doesn't call us to be successful, He calls us to be faithful. This includes roundly and clearly rejecting both fornication and abortion in our self-addicted culture, for when violating the 6th commandment becomes the norm, violating of the 5th commandment is not far behind.
