Are we as wise as serpents, and as simple as doves?
Before we get started, please be sure to read my previous article; Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil, check out my latest on Locals; MLMs and the march of the mannequins, and I'd be remiss if I didn't remind y'all that I've written a book, check it out, here; Elisabeth and the other man (Paperback), and here; Elisabeth and the other man (ebook)
If you want to USCCB's translation, go here;Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
“It is you who are the salt of the earth, but if salt loses its taste, how can it be salty again? It is good for nothing, one throws it out and tramples upon it.
It is you who are the light of the world, a city built on a mountain cannot be hidden.
One does not light a lamp and put it under a bucket, to the contrary, one places a lamp on its stand, where it will be lit for all who are in the house.
It is so that you will shine before men, so they will see the good that you do, and they will praise your Father, who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:13-16, translation from French, my own).
So, because it's the latest Mass in my city (well, not the latest in the CSRA, but, in Aiken), as is occasionally my custom, I went to the Spanish Mass. And what did I do? I translated Gospel reading from Mass from French into English, during the Spanish Mass.
Being autistic (Yo), I translated it as literally as possible, which I was actually informed not to do by my French professor.
She said that you should translate it as naturally as possible.
But, being autistic, that would mean being quite literal.
But, I digress.
So, I'm not hip on the lingo from the kids these days (The Simpsons - I Used To Be With It (Abe Simpson Rant), mild language warning).
But, I think “salty” is supposed to be an insult.
I don't know, maybe they have Lot's wife in mind (Genesis 19:26).
But, what's so wrong about being salty?
I'd rather be salty than trampled under foot.
Now, why do I mention this?
Because no one uses “you are the light of the world” as an insult.
But, why salt?
Well, it's not like Jesus's audience would have known about peppers from the New World, and, even at that time, while they would have knowledge of other spices, salt is universal.
You could get it relatively cheap, especially if you lived near salt water or a salt deposit.
In other words, everyone had access to it.
Jesus's audience knew that salt would make bland food, well, not bland.
If Jesus's followers weren't salt to the world, people would have found the Christian message to be bland.
I think, sadly, this is something that's true.
Whether it's Anglican churches having tea time (I tried to found some information for that, just to keep getting a 404 error, so, to be fair, maybe they stopped), deconsecrating Catholic church (like in the closest large-ish city to me;Sacred Heart Augusta), or, whatever this is; Female Lutheran pastor leads church in 'sparkle creed' prayer to 'nonbinary' God, says Christ Jesus had '2 dads' (yes Ashley, the power OF SPARKLE)!
This is only going to repel people from Christianity, now, draw them in!
Be salt!
*As I always mention which version of the Bible I used, it's this; La Bible en français courant avec notes avec les deutérocanoniques. Mine cost me like $0.54 at a Catholic thrift store.
Anyway, Adam Charles Hovey is the founder of the Catholicism, news, and whatever community on Locals and, if you'd like to help him out, go to Help with medical bills
Oh, and because of Brad Arnold's recent death, I think this is appropriate, 3 Doors Down: Better Life
