How to Prepare for Lent with Mary.
On today’s feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the Church places us quietly in the Temple—forty days after Christmas—where light and prophecy meet surrender. Mary and Joseph bring the Child Jesus, not knowing that an elderly man named Simeon will speak words that echo through every Christian heart, especially the heart of a mother:
“And you yourself a sword will pierce—so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” (Luke 2:35)
This is not a gentle blessing. It is a truth spoken in love.
The Sword That Reveals
Simeon’s prophecy is not primarily about suffering for suffering’s sake. The sword is not punishment—it is revelation. It pierces so that what is hidden may be exposed. It cuts through illusion, self-protection, and fear. It reveals what we cling to instead of God.
Mary receives these words without protest, explanation, or escape. She does not yet see Calvary, but she consents to the path. From the Temple onward, her motherhood will be marked by surrender—by holding what she cannot control and trusting what she cannot yet understand.
This is where the Presentation meets Begin Again.
Lent Begins in the Heart
Before Lent ever becomes fasting or discipline, it begins as revelation. God does not ask us first to do more. He asks us to see more clearly.
The sword that pierces Mary’s heart is the same sword that gently presses against ours each Lent:
Where am I living on autopilot?
Where have I grown numb instead of faithful?
What am I avoiding that God is asking me to face?
Lent is not about self-improvement. It is about truth.
The Rosary: Where the Sword Becomes Prayer
When we pray the Rosary, we step into Mary’s interior life. Each mystery is a place where the sword has already passed—through joy, sorrow, glory, and light. Mary does not shield us from suffering; she teaches us how to remain faithful within it.
The Rosary trains the heart to stay present when pierced:
This is why the Rosary is not repetitive—it is formative.
Begin Again: Not Escaping the Sword, But Trusting It
To Begin Again this Lent is not to promise perfection. It is to return—daily—to the place where God reveals the heart. Like Mary in the Temple, we bring what we have, not knowing all that will be asked, yet trusting the One who asks.
The sword will pierce.
But it will not destroy.
It will reveal what must be surrendered so that Christ may be received more fully.
As you step toward Lent, let Mary walk ahead of you. Let the Rosary become your place of truth. Let the sword do its gentle work—not to wound you, but to free you.
Because every true beginning starts with revelation.
And every revealed heart is a heart ready for grace.
