Lowly Shepherds
Out beyond the city limits on a lonely rolling hill,
Shepherds keeping watch among their flocks by night.
Common men among the sheep,
Cold and weary lacking sleep,
Longing for a day of endless holy light.
Cast aside and disregarded yet still faithful to the Lord,
Who will shepherd all the nations through his Son.
Keeping vigil dusk to dawn,
To their hope are ever drawn,
Seeking holy rest when journey’s day is done.
Watching waiting hearts are still,
Seeking always Yahweh’s will.
Shepherds strong the load to bear,
Never given to despair…
Lowly Shepherds in the fields a perfect sign of gracious God,
Faithful righteous men who walk the rugged way.
Standing strong against the enemy with mighty staff and rod,
Ever looking toward the perfect endless day.
You the truest sons of promise, you our parable of hope,
Of the Shepherd King who comes to save our race.
In the wilderness descending and ascending Zion’s slope,
Seeking peace and pure Messiah’s perfect grace.
Leading flocks to verdant pastures, peaceful meadows, quiet streams,
Sheep are never lacking for their daily needs.
Cup it ever overflows,
Every sheep the shepherd knows,
Every call in deep distress the shepherd heeds.
How they hold the dearest promise made to Father Abraham,
How the Lord will send the gentle holy lamb,
To redeem the world in grace,
And to take each sinner’s place,
He the Shepherd true the wondrous great I am.
Watching, waiting, hearts are still,
Seeking always Yahweh’s will.
Sky is filled with brightest light,
Bringing day to darkest night.
Angel voices drawing near,
Call to shepherds have no fear.
Child is born this very day,
He the Life, the Truth, the Way.
Sleeping still in stable stall,
He the One to save us all.
Shepherds leave their flocks and hasten to the stable now to see,
Sleeping baby wrapped in humble swaddling clothes.
At the sight they humbly bow,
All their fears dispelling now,
As the peace of God within each heart now grows.
Baby Jesus is the Savior who will walk the narrow way,
And ascend the rugged hill to face the cross.
He to suffer in our place,
Pour his love in perfect grace,
Bring salvation to the nation by his loss.
Watching, waiting, hearts are still,
Seeking always Yahweh’s will.
Shepherds strong the load to bear,
Never given to despair…
Lowly Shepherds in the fields a perfect sign of gracious God,
Faithful righteous men, who walk the rugged way.
