Celtics Coach Credits Catholic Faith for Winning NBA Title
In the final part of Christmas’s true meaning, we learn from the perspective of Charlie Brown. A Charlie Brown Christmas was released in 1965. It almost never existed because of Linus quoting the Gospel of Luke, but it is now a beloved classic.
Charlie Brown isn’t in the Christmas spirit. His friends are excited for the big day, even his beloved dog, Snoopy. He gets lost in the racket of commercialism tied to the holiday. He was approached to direct the Christmas play.
He later gets a tree that is not appealing to those looking for something big. He becomes a laughingstock to his friends and fears that Christmas is ruined because of him. That’s when Charlie pleads for someone to explain its true meaning.
Linus steps in, takes the stage, and quotes the Gospel of Luke, which reads:
While they were there, the time came for her to give birth to her child, and she had her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. In the nearby countryside, there were shepherds living in the fields and keeping watch over their flock throughout the night. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them. They were terror-stricken, but the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for I bring you good news of great joy for all the people. For this day in the city of David, there has been born to you a Savior who is Christ, the Lord.
This will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to all those on whom his favor rests.”
Linus reminds Charlie that that is what Christmas is all about.
Like Charlie, we get caught up in the racket of getting gifts for family and friends that we sometimes forget to slow down and reflect on its true meaning. Always return to the crib and recognize its true meaning.
Even Charlie had to understand Christmas’s true meaning in the simplest ways. Charlie saw potential in the scrawny tree he picked out as he felt that it needed love.
Always find celebration in the simplest ways and never forget the true meaning of Christmas.
This is the conclusion of the three-part series. While there are others to choose from, it will happen at a later time unless someone takes up the gauntlet.
