The Creed: What We Believe and How We Live It.
Symbols Used in Baptism.
Baptism uses visible signs that explain invisible spiritual realities. These include:
1. Water
- Symbol of cleansing and new life.
- It washes away original sin and signifies spiritual rebirth.
- (John 3:5, Titus 3:5)
2. Holy Oil (Chrism and Oil of Catechumens)
- Symbol of strength, healing, and consecration.
- The baptized is anointed as priest, prophet, and king.
- (1 Samuel 16:13, 2 Corinthians 1:21-22)
3. Candle (Baptismal Candle)
- Symbol of the light of Christ.
- The baptized is called to walk as a child of light and reflect Christ in the world.
- (John 8:12, Matthew 5:14-16)
4. White Garment
- Symbol of purity and new life in Christ.
- The baptized "puts on Christ" and is called to live a holy life.
- (Galatians 3:27, Revelation 7:14)
5. Salt (optional in modern rite, traditional in some places)
- Symbol of preservation from evil and spiritual wisdom.
- It reminds the baptized to be the "salt of the earth."
- (Matthew 5:13)
6. Sign of the Cross
-The first sign made during the baptismal rite.
- It marks the person as belonging to Christ.
- (Ezekiel 9:4, Galatians 6:17)
7. Baptismal Font (optional to mention)
- The place of baptism; represents the womb of the Church where new life begins.
Requirements for Baptism
To receive Baptism properly, the following are needed:
- Faith: Belief in Jesus Christ, even if it’s through parents and godparents (Mark 16:16).
- Name: A Christian name (usually of a saint) showing the child belongs to God’s family.
- Sponsor/Godparent: A baptized Catholic who will support the child in faith and spiritual growth.
- Intention: The person or parents must desire baptism freely.
Rite/Steps of Baptism
The ceremony of Baptism includes these main steps:
1. Welcome and Naming: The child is named and welcomed into the Church.
2. Word of God: Readings and prayers.
3. Renunciation of Sin and Profession of Faith.
4. Blessing of Water.
5. Baptism Proper: Water poured three times (or immersion) while saying:
“I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
6. Anointing with Chrism.
7. Clothing with White Garment.
8. Giving of Candle.
9. Final Blessing.
Our Responsibilities After Baptism
After Baptism, we are called to:
- Live as Children of God: Avoid sin and grow in holiness (Ephesians 5:8).
- Participate in the Sacraments: Especially the Eucharist and Confirmation.
- Grow in Faith: Through prayer, reading the Bible, and Catholic teaching.
- Be Witnesses: Share Christ’s love and teachings with others (Matthew 28:19–20).
