Devotions for Kids: Don't Wait, Just Help
Devotions for Kids is a series meant for sharing so that everyone - family and community - can spend time in God's Word together with the children in their lives and grow in faith.
Jesus told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary.
Luke 18:1
Jesus is teaching us a lesson not just about how to pray, but on the attitude we should have when we come to God in prayer. Today's Gospel talks about persistence, which means not giving up when things are hard and continuing to try no matter what. God invites us to be persistent when we pray. We might sometimes feel like giving up when we think God isn't listening to our prayers, but when we keep choosing to turn to God in prayer, we will be reminded of how much He loves us and provides for our needs every time.
The widow in the parable was someone who had no money and no power, but she was persistent. She kept coming back because her need was so big that she wasn't willing to give up on it. Jesus teaches us that we need to feel the same way when we talk to God. Constantly praying is important in our lives, and we need to stick with it, even when our prayer doesn't change things right away.
Always choosing to trust in God makes our faith strong and our hearts ready to receive what God has planned for us because His plans are always good and always perfect. Praying means never leaving the conversation with God, never giving up, and always believing that no matter what, God hears us and will bless us with what is best.
Today, think about one prayer request that you have in your heart that has been there for a long time. This can be a prayer that is for you or for someone else, and can be something that you've been sharing with God for a while. Pray for this request five times throughout the day. Each time you do, make sure you let God know that you believe He hears you, because He does!
Let's pray: God, sometimes when I pray I want to give up because I don't know if You hear me or if You're going to answer my prayer. Thank You for inviting me to be persistent, to pray always, and never give up hope that You will give me what I need! Amen.
