Devotions for Kids: Gifts and Stewardship
Devotions for Kids is a series meant for sharing so that everyone - family and community - can spend time in God's Word together with the children in their lives and grow in faith.
For she is fairer than the sun and surpasses every constellation of the stars.
Wisdom 7:29
Have you ever tried to look straight at the sun? I hope not, because it's too bright! What about the stars - have you ever looked up on a clear night and seen them all twinkling throughout the sky? I hope so, because they are much easier to look at. Both of these kinds of light provide us with something beautiful from the sky, a way to see the people and things around us in a special way.
In today's reading, the author is writing about Wisdom. The words make it sound like Wisdom is a person to help us focus on all the qualities that Wisdom has. We hear that Wisdom is intelligent, clean, and loves what is good. Wisdom is also more beautiful and brighter than the sun and all the stars combined!
When the Bible says Wisdom is "fairer than the sun," that means choosing to be wise and good is the most beautiful thing anyone can ever do. Wisdom is "fairer" (which means more beautiful) than the light that shines on the whole world. When you use Wisdom, you bring a pure ray of light to the people around you by helping them to see what is good and right.
When we hear that Wisdom "surpasses every constellation," we learn that it is a better and more reliable guide than even the stars in the sky. This was an especially important lesson for many people living in Biblical times who worked on boats and used the stars to find their way.
Choosing to show Wisdom means that you become more beautiful on the inside than anything you could ever see. All the parts of you that shine the brightest light up the world more than any star. So, today your challenge is to be a light giver. Instead of waiting for others to be kind to you, you should be the one who shines first. When you choose to shine with God's Wisdom, your heart lights up with a beauty that is bigger and brighter than the sky.
Let's pray: God, I want to be a light giver. I want to shine as bright as You have made me to shine and in doing that, lead other people closer to what is right, closer to You. Thank You for the light you have put in me and the light You have put into everyone else I know! Amen.
