Devotions for Kids: God's Fingerprints
Devotions for Kids is a series meant for sharing so that everyone - family and community - can spend time in God's Word together with the children in their lives and grow in faith.
The Lord replied, "If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea', and it would obey you."
Luke 17:6
Do you know what a mustard seed looks like? It's actually really hard to see because it's one of the smallest seeds in the whole world - smaller than the seeds you use to plant flowers and vegetables. If you were to put a mustard seed on the tip of your finger, it wouldn't even cover the whole thing. Because it's so small, a mustard seed is very easy to lose if you drop it. Jesus uses the example of a tiny mustard seed on purpose in today's Gospel because He is teaching us an important lesson about our faith.
We all have problems sometimes, and those problems can seem big. What problems are you worried about right now? Maybe you have a big test coming up in school this week and you're nervous about doing well. Maybe you've had a disagreement with a friend or a sibling and you need to ask for forgiveness. Whatever your big problem is today, you might be feeling like your faith in God isn't big enough to help you handle it. Jesus's words, though, tell us something different.
Today we hear that faith, no matter how small, is bigger than any problem we could ever face. You don't need a giant amount of faith to be brave and do wonderful things. Even small faith is powerful. Jesus promises that just a little bit of trust in God can help you do things that feel impossible, like when He talks about moving a large tree into the ocean. Your trust in God, your faith, even it it feels small, can help you face your biggest worries and the hardest choices that your heart is holding.
Your power is not in how big your faith is. Your power is in how big God is! Remember that a little seed can grow into a very large plant, so your faith, when you choose to plant it in Jesus, will do great things!
Let's pray: God, sometimes my faith is as small as a mustard seed, but I trust in You! Please take my faith and make it big and strong to help me with all of my worries and fears! Amen.
