Devotions for Kids: Be a Superhero of Peace!

Welcome to Devotions for Kids, a new series on Catholic365!  Devotions for Kids will provide regular reflection and prayer, formatted just like an adult devotional, but in kid-friendly language and using real-life examples that young hearts can relate to.  This series is meant for sharing so everyone - moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, and friends can spend time in God's Word together with the children in their lives and grow in faith.  I am so grateful you are here for the journey!

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Matthew 5:9

Close your eyes and think of your favorite superhero... why are they your favorite?  Maybe they are brave or strong.  Maybe they always go out of their way to help people who are in need.  Superheroes can have all kinds of super qualities that help them to save the day.  Did you know that you can be a superhero too?  It's true!  You don't even need a cape.

Jesus calls us all to be peacemakers because making peace is a superpower!  When we see that something is wrong, when we know that someone is unhappy because of a problem, or when we choose to show love to others who are in need, we help them find peace just like Jesus wants.  Let's think about some examples:

When your friends are arguing over the ball when you are out playing and you remind them of how important it is to share and take turns, you're a superhero of peace!  When you hear someone saying mean things about another person and you choose to say kind things about them instead, you're a superhero of peace!  When your family member is upset because it will take a long time to wash the many dirty dishes are in the sink after dinner and you offer to help them clean up, you're a superhero of peace!  There are all kinds of ways to serve God and others in peace so we can all live the way that Jesus wants.  I wonder how many ways you can find?

The words of Jesus in our verse for today promise that when we make peace, we are counted among God's children.  Just like you have a family here on earth, you are also part of one big family in heaven with a loving Father (that's God!) who knows you well and loves you more than you even know.

Let's Pray:  Jesus, you are the ultimate superhero.  You are brave, you are strong, you always help me when I am in need, and you give me the superpower of bringing peace to others.  Help me today and every day to be a superhero of peace and be just like you!  Amen.
