What is the measure of a disciple? Paul gives us the answer today in the second reading. To what degree are we suffering for the Gospel?
Jesus suffered in these three ways throughout the Gospels. We know that Jesus was overwhelmed at times with the weight of the needs around Him, that He suffered death on the cross for the glory of God, and that He was insulted and persecuted for the sake of the Gospel truths He preached.
Jesus suffered the Gospel. His disciples did as well. As did most of the canonized Saints. Jesus is clear throughout Scripture that those who follow Him will experience similar sufferings.
But it’s not all bad news of suffering! Paul goes on to say that if we endure, we shall reign with him. In other words, endurance for the sake of suffering the Gospel pays off in the next life. Faith and discipleship, in the end, heal us of our iniquities and make us well.
