DEMONIC INVERSION
On Monday, the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. president Trump posted a picture of a statue of Mary with the toddler Jesus standing on her lap.
Commissioned by Pope Benedict XV in thanksgiving for the end of the First World War and completed by Roman artist Guido Galli in 1918, a marble statue of Mary enthroned is set high against the wall. Beneath the statue is the inscription, “Ave Regina Pacis” – “Hail, Queen of Peace.”
Mary’s left hand is raised up and out to the world in a gesture that seems to say, 'Enough! Stop the war and violence!” In her right arm she holds Christ, depicted as a toddler dangling an olive branch, a symbol of peace, waiting for his mother’s word to allow it to fall from his fingers and descend to the dove waiting below as it sits beside the throne preparing to fly, one wing already raised and eyes fixed intently on the branch in Christ’s hand.
Mary’s eyes look down lovingly to the viewers below.
