Rehumanizing Thanksgiving Dinner: How and What to Say to Someone Who is Against Church Teachings
In light of these ongoing struggles, Pope Leo XIV has called upon all the faithful to unite in a special day of prayer and fasting for peace on Friday, August 22nd. This date holds particular significance as it is the liturgical commemoration of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As the Pope reminded us, "Mary is the Mother of the faithful here on earth and is remembered as the Queen of Peace."
Our Holy Father invites us to celebrate this day by "imploring the Lord to grant us peace and justice, and to wipe away the tears of those who suffer because of ongoing armed conflicts." He specifically asks for "a peace that is disarmed and disarming" for the whole world.
Let us heed this call from our shepherd. On August 22nd, let us offer our prayers and sacrifices, uniting our intentions with those of the Holy Father and the entire Church. Let us pray fervently for all who suffer because of war, for an end to violence, and for the triumph of peace and justice in our world.
"May Mary, Queen of Peace, intercede so that peoples may find the path of peace," Pope Leo XIV prayed.
Let us join our voices with his, trusting in the powerful intercession of our Blessed Mother.
We kindly ask that you share this invitation with your community and parish staff. In a time when peace is urgently needed—not only across the globe but within our own homes and communities—this day offers a meaningful opportunity to unite in prayer and reflection.
As a reminder, the Church’s guidelines for fasting permit one full meal, along with two smaller meals that together do not equal a full meal.
