Sunday Gospel Reflection (April 20, 2025)
We are going to flip things and talk about the Gospel first because that is what the subject of this Gospel did- flipped things on their head. John’s birth is anything but ordinary. His parents are old. His name surprises everyone. His role is clear from the start. He’s not the Messiah, but he’s going to make straight the paths before the Messiah arrives.
When Zechariah confirms the name “John,” his voice returns. That is both symbolic and prophetic. Something new is starting, something unexpected. God is doing something different. John’s life shows us: we’re not here to blend in. We’re here to point toward something greater than ourselves.
In Isaiah, we hear the servant say, “The Lord called me from birth.” John fulfills this. His whole existence is about preparation, making space and calling people back. This is what clears the path for Christ.
This isn’t flashy ministry. It’s gritty and lonely. But it is essential. We forget sometimes how valuable it is to prepare the ground, even if we don’t see the results. God doesn’t just use John. He forms him for this role from the womb. That’s not just true of saints—it’s true of you and me, too.
In Acts, Paul reminds us: John never claimed center stage. His whole message was, “I’m not the one. But He’s coming.” That kind of clarity takes humility. And courage. In a culture that rewards self-promotion, John shows us a better way: live with purpose, speak truth, and get out of the way when Jesus arrives.
So today’s question is simple: What am I making space for? Am I preparing room for Christ—in my conversations, in my schedule, in my decisions? John’s birth marks the start of a new season. The same invitation stands for us: step into it. No fear. No noise. Just purpose.
