Teaching Children the Real Presence
War, wildfires, political opposition, accidents, and poverty—news cycles bombard us daily with negativity. Sometimes it seems as soon as one disaster is behind us, another one takes its place. This can be discouraging and can make it difficult for us not to fall into despair. In times like these, if we are not anchored in our faith, we can easily feel hopeless in the face of all the noise around us. It can seem impossible to have hope in God when the world is so loud and unpredictable. But while the world may rage and roar, we need to stop and listen. Because the noise of the world cannot drown out the still, constant voice of God calling us to trust in Him. He is there even when we think He isn’t.
Recall Mark 4:35, Jesus Calms the Storm. The disciples find themselves in the middle of a storm, and they fear for their lives. Where is Jesus in this chaos? He’s asleep on a cushion in the back of the boat! To the disciples, His silence and lack of concern felt like abandonment. They don’t understand that his nap did not equal indifference. He’s teaching them a lesson; faith means trusting in God even when it seems He isn’t paying attention. He is paying attention, and He is present. Jesus doesn’t just calm the storm; He is the calm of the storm. His presence changes everything. Faith requires us to trust in Him even when we are surrounded by crashing waves. The key to faith is not having all the answers, it’s about trusting the one who does. When we keep our eyes on Christ, there is no earthly challenge that can separate us from the love of God. Our hope is not found in institutions, politics, or people. Our hope is found only in Jesus Christ.
Prayer is essential to maintain this focus on Him. But what do we do when prayer feels hard because we feel so hopeless? Even when it feels unproductive, we must continue a daily habit of prayer despite what we believe is God’s silence. The disciples realized on the boat that silence does not equal absence but rather a time of refinement. And so we must also recognize how these moments challenge us to trust in God’s goodness and love even when we do not see immediate answers to our prayers. We should use this time to look at our motives; are we seeking God’s will or our own? Are we trusting Him to act in His way or as we think He should act?
My dear friends, the challenges we face now are real, but they are not insurmountable. By rooting ourselves in Christ, we can persevere in hope, knowing that God hears every word, sees every action and emotion, and will answer in ways far greater than we can imagine.
So, the next time you feel overwhelmed, remember: Jesus is in your boat! He may seem quiet, but He is in control. And who knows? Perhaps He is just waiting for you to trust Him before He commands, “Quiet! Be still!” Until then, take a deep breath, continue to pray in faith, and rest in the assurance that He’s got this. Always.
