Modern Martyrdom

The idea that morality, or right and wrong, is subjective has pervaded our culture. This notion that there is no universal truth has quite handily brushed aside the previously established Catholic teaching. Lead by a generation that lets its passions and emotions make its decisions, the world has embraced moral relativism. It is now frowned upon to express an opinion regarding any kind of truth. Telling a teenager not to drink and party is intolerant. Expressing dislike toward the use of marijuana is now a major faux pas. Our culture has developed a strong dislike toward anything that goes against the majority.
The problem with moral relativism is that each and every person their own Creator, the center of their own universe. This mentality turns minds inward, rapidly creating people with no regard for anyone but themselves.
Another issue with moral relativism is its very nature: complete and utter lack of order. Once the relativist asserts a lack of objective morality, anything goes. Following that flawed logic, murderers and pedophiles cannot be convicted because their actions reflect their subjective morality. They were simply acting based on what they wanted and what they liked to do, and it would be intolerant to tell them that they were in the wrong.
Now, some readers may be saying that the above points are extreme hyperbole and that no relativist would ever think that way. This may be true. However, if the relativist declared that the murderer and the pedophile did something wrong, he would be denying his own philosophy. The relativist applies the same morality to someone other than himself, thus rejecting moral relativism as a whole!
Let us pray that our society realizes the danger of this chaotic philosophy and again affirms that morality is in fact objective. If only our broken world returned to reason, we would not be in such a dark place. Abortion, the murder of innocent human life, would not be so strongly encouraged by our leaders and so frequently practiced by millions of women. The distortion of human sexuality would not be so relentlessly assaulting marriage and the family. Hatred and intolerance toward Christianity and its mission would not be praised and encouraged. A world without morality is a world without love, and that is wrong.
