12 Baskets of Brokenness
As Catholic men, we wear many hats—business owner, husband, leader, and for some, father or pet parent. Running a marketing agency while maintaining a strong marriage, managing household responsibilities, and ensuring our faith life doesn’t take a backseat can feel like a juggling act. It’s easy to get caught up in work deadlines and daily obligations, leaving little room for prayer and reflection. But balance is possible.
Lent presents the perfect opportunity to reassess priorities and establish a rhythm that not only strengthens our relationship with God but also carries us through the rest of the year. Below is a practical guide to achieving work, life, and prayer balance, starting this Lent and beyond.
The first step toward balance is identifying what matters most. As Catholic men, our faith, family, and vocation should take priority over distractions that drain our time and energy. Ask yourself:
What areas of my life have been neglected?
Where is my time being spent the most?
What changes can I make to align my schedule with my faith and values?
Make a list of non-negotiables—daily Mass (if possible), family dinners, prayer time, and at least one Sabbath-like day of rest each week.
Lent is a season of sacrifice, but also one of spiritual renewal. Use these 40 days to form habits that will extend throughout the year.
Before checking emails or social media, spend 10–15 minutes in prayer and Scripture. The Liturgy of the Hours or the daily readings from the USCCB website provide an excellent foundation.
Lenten Challenge: Set a morning prayer alarm and commit to this every day before work.
Running a business often means irregular hours, but just as meetings are scheduled, so should family time. Make it a point to have dinner with your spouse and loved ones without distractions.
Lenten Challenge: One night a week, set aside phones and focus on quality time with your spouse—whether it’s a date night, praying together, or simply enjoying each other’s company.
Incorporate blocks of time where work is set aside for prayer, exercise, or personal growth. Sacred Hours could mean:
The temptation to work through the weekend is strong, but God commanded us to rest for a reason. Use Sundays for Mass, leisure, and reconnecting with loved ones.
Lenten Challenge: Choose one activity that brings you peace—whether it’s fishing, reading, or simply napping— and commit to making Sunday a true day of rest.
St. Josemaría Escrivá, the founder of Opus Dei, taught that work can be sanctified when done for the glory of God. Even the busiest entrepreneur can make work a prayer by:
Lenten Challenge: Start each workday by offering your efforts to God and reflecting on how your business serves His greater purpose.
The key to lasting balance is consistency. After Easter, evaluate what worked and what didn’t. Adjust as needed, but don’t let old habits creep back in. Some ways to stay on track:
Finding balance between work, life, and prayer isn’t about perfection—it’s about persistence. Lent offers a natural season to refocus, but the real challenge is carrying these habits forward. By prioritizing faith, setting boundaries, and offering our work to God, we can live as Catholic entrepreneurs who not only run successful businesses but also lead fulfilling, faith-centered lives.
This Lent, let’s take the first steps toward lasting balance—one prayer, one sacred hour, and one Sunday at a time.
