When reflecting on the nativity story, we often focus on the figures present: Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and the wise men. However, I like to let my mind wander to what was happening behind the scenes that night. I envision a cosmic celebration unfolding throughout the heavens and in all of creation on the night Jesus was born. This was the long-awaited fulfillment of God’s promise, and I imagine the heavens and earth were alive with splendor and wonder.
In my children’s book, The Melody of Love, I explore the wonder of that night, using the metaphor of a melody being released into the world. As this beautiful melody spreads throughout creation, it stirs the creatures of the forest and those in the depths of the sea with its irresistible song. It is the melody of love—God’s presence among us—bringing life and hope to a world that has longed for restoration and connection with its Maker. This melody echoes the deep, intrinsic relationship between God and creation, reminding us that we are not merely observers in this story but active participants in a divine symphony.
Creation’s Longing for Redemption
Have you ever considered that alongside the beauty and joy of creation exists an eternal longing? As stated in Romans 8:19-22, creation eagerly awaits liberation from its bondage to decay. This longing reflects a deeper truth: all living things desire restoration to their original goodness, free from the effects of sin and death. The natural world is imbued with a yearning for wholeness, echoing the deep cries of those who inhabit it.
This yearning is evident all around us. From the groaning of the earth during natural disasters to the plight of humanity and the suffering of creatures, we witness the impact of a world aching for healing. The very fabric of creation groans under the weight of sin, bearing witness to its consequences. Yet, amid this profound longing, there is hope rooted in the birth of Christ. His arrival signifies hope not only for humanity but for all creation, promising restoration and renewal for everything God has made.
The Promise of Restoration: A Future Hope
As we experience a foretaste of restoration in the earth today, we are reminded of the future hope of complete renewal. Revelation 21:1-5 proclaims that God will make all things new: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will no longer be death. Neither will there be any mourning or crying or pain, for the old order has passed away” (NCB). This vision offers us assurance that He will bring complete restoration to all of creation.
It invites us to live in eager anticipation of the day when sorrow, pain, and decay will be no more. As we approach this season where we celebrate the birth of Jesus, let us remember that this event was not merely a historical moment but a pivotal point in the unfolding story of redemption. Our hope is not in vain; it is firmly rooted in the assurance that God is actively working to restore all things to their intended glory.
Singing with Creation
As we contemplate the nativity, let’s also reflect on how we can participate in this restoration. Every act of love for one another, every time we care for a creature or the world around us, every expression of gratitude, and each moment we lift our hearts in prayer, bring us into harmony with that beautiful melody of divine love. We are His workmanship, created to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do (Eph. 2:10). So let us join in song with all of creation and echo this melody of love throughout the earth.
