What is in the Cathedrals? A Reflection Inspired by God
Attending Mass is a deeply personal and spiritual experience for me. Over the years, I’ve developed a set of practices that help me approach each Mass with intention, focus, and a receptive heart. These steps ensure that I not only participate in the liturgy but also truly engage with it on a spiritual level. Here’s how I prepare for Mass:
One of the first things I do is go through the readings for the day. Understanding these readings is crucial because there’s always a connection between them. The first reading and the Gospel are often intertwined, offering a profound message that resonates throughout the liturgy. The second reading, while sometimes seeming less connected, often provides valuable insights that enrich the overall theme. I make it a point to grasp the essence of these readings so that I’m better prepared to absorb the lessons they offer during Mass.
For me, having a specific prayer intention helps focus my mind and heart. I often frame a question or seek guidance on something that’s weighing on me. For example, I might ask, “How can I make my daughter’s life more meaningful this holiday with the resources I have?” With this question in mind, I approach the Mass with all my senses attuned to the readings, songs, and homilies, as well as the actions of those around me. Without rushing to judgment, I often find that the answers or guidance I seek come to me during the Mass, sometimes in unexpected ways.
I make it a point to arrive at least 15 minutes before Mass begins. This quiet time allows me to present my question or intention to God and to calm my mind. Being in a state of peace and receptivity is essential for truly hearing and understanding the messages conveyed during the service. When I’m rushed or distracted, I find that I miss out on the depth of the experience. Therefore, I take this time to pray, settle my thoughts, and prepare my heart for what’s to come.
Attending Mass regularly can sometimes lead to it feeling routine. I strive to ensure that each Mass feels unique and special. This requires a conscious effort to engage all my senses and be fully present in the moment. By setting goals, remaining committed, and keeping my spiritual “antennas” raised, I maintain a sense of wonder and reverence at every Mass. Each service becomes an opportunity for new insights, growth, and connection with God.
Finally, I believe that the offering we bring to Mass is more than just a physical gesture; it’s a reflection of our prayers and intentions. I prepare my offering well in advance, tying it to the specific prayers I’m bringing to the Mass. This practice deepens the significance of my offering, making it a tangible expression of my spiritual seriousness and devotion.
