Join thousands of other lay-folk, priests and religious in the Angelic Warfare Confraternity and slay your porn addiction. This Confraternity is an ancient, Church approved, Dominican run Confraternity of brothers and sisters who want to fight for chastity together and do it under the patronage of St. Thomas Aquinas. Statistics are hardly necessary to prove what a pornified culture that American Catholics are saddled with. It is on TV, at the movies and on the billboards on the way to work. And porn addiction is no joke. It ruins marriages, antagonizes with depression those affected, teaches men and women to objectify one another and feeds an industry meant to usurp the dignity of the human person. In a phrase, porn addiction ruins lives and breaks the heart of Jesus. But the good news is that Catholics have many weapons in their arsenal when it comes to the fight for sexual purity: the Sacraments, the Rosary, Marian Consecration and now, if you have not heard of it before - the Angelic Warfare Confraternity.
What the Angelic Warfare Confraternity is Not
The Angelic Warfare Confraternity (the AWC from here on out) is not a magic bullet. If you are struggling with porn addiction, the first step is always to go first to Jesus whose most Sacred Heart is tender and always ready to embrace those who are struggling with his love and deep affection. Remember that there is no length, no depth, and no height that our Lord will not go to rescue a suffering soul that is need. It is with this in mind that we should "boldly approach the throne of grace that we may find mercy and receive grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 4:16). Often times the means of his love and affection can include counseling, the hard work of accountability, deepening the wells of prayer in our life and doing the hard work of self-examination and changing deeply ingrained habits. The AWC is no replacement for these other tools, but another one in the bucket. A highly affective one!
What the Angelic Warfare Confraternity Is
The AWC is an ancient Dominican confraternity focused on surrendering daily through special prayers and Mass intentions, the chastity and purity of its members. The order finds its roots in the story of the Angelic Doctor himself, St. Thomas Aquinas, who did not succumb to sexual temptations even when his family so famously sent a prostitute after him with the hopes of enticing him to break his religious vows. The confraternity was officially recognized by the Church in 1727 by Pope Benedict XII. When new members enroll in the confraternity they join the ranks of thousands of members saying special prayers daily for the sexual purity of all members enrolled. This is a powerful spiritual weapon for those trapped in a struggle with porn addiction. Enrolling in the AWC also gains a plenary indulgence on the day of enrollment as well as on many other feast days.
The prayers of the Confraternity
Two beautifully moving prayers are said daily as well as fifteen Hail Mary’s, each for a special intention.
There is the prayer to Jesus, said first:
Dear Jesus, I know that every perfect gift, and especially that of chastity, depends on the power of Your providence. Without You a mere creature can do nothing. Therefore, I beg You to defend by Your grace the chastity and purity of my body and soul. And if I have ever sensed or imagined anything that could stain my chastity and purity, blot it out, Supreme Lord of my powers, that I may advance with a pure heart in Your love and service, offering myself on the most pure altar of Your divinity all the days of my life. Amen.
The prayer to St. Thomas:
Chosen lily of innocence, pure St. Thomas, who kept chaste the robe of baptism and became an angel in the flesh after being girded by two angels, I implore you to commend me to Jesus, the Spotless Lamb, and to Mary, the Queen of Virgins. Gentle protector of my purity, ask them that I, who wear the holy sign of your victory over the flesh, may also share your purity, and after imitating you on earth may at last come to be crowned with you among the angels. Amen.
And fifteen Hail Mary’s for the following intentions:
Social and Cultural Climate, Relationships, Modesty in Dress and Movement, Sensuality, Five Senses, Power of Estimation, Affectivity, Imagination, Memory, Intellect, Conscience, Will, the Heart, Self Surrender, and Love.
This is a powerful and effective set of prayers meant to cast the mind daily on the love of Christ, his merciful heart toward those in need of grace, and especially for turning our minds from the onslaught of a sexualized culture to the mind of Christ.
How to Enroll
Enrolling in the AWC is easy. It just takes a little bit of humility and, the easiest part: visiting the AWC website. It has all of the information you will need to enroll. After that it comes down to ordering the enrollment packet, finding a Dominican or other approved priest who can enroll you, and then you are on your way to experiencing a spiritual bombshell. And believe me, this is not something that the Enemy of your soul wants you to do. But that is just another testament to how mighty and effective the blessings of this confraternity are at slaying your porn addiction and aiding you on your journey to sexual purity.
After all, our journey to sexual purity is a journey of desire wherein we discover that our sexuality is not meant to be suppressed, but rather more fully expressed in its proper vision. It is in this journey that we discover who we are, what we are made for, and what our bodies say about both God and what it means to be human persons.
Our journey to sexual purity is, in the end, a journey to the Heart of Christ.
