The Power of the Spoken Word

This short reflection packs a big punch!! In today’s world even truth is subjective.
I remember a few years back our district rolled out their new comprehensive math curriculum, our daughter was in second grade. We were amazed by the way the new curriculum was written. The children were to work in groups and they no longer concerned if the students got the right answer but were more concerned in how they arrived at the answer.
I did not understand that logic because it was math. Math is not a subjective subject!!!! 2 + 2 would always equal 4. That’s kind a how I feel about truth. There is always a right and a wrong. That’s what Jesus came to teach us and perfect in us.
Moral integrity is dying, as we slip further and further into political correctness, causing a deafening effect on the ears of our souls.
How often have you been urged by the spirit to respond to a morally explosive question or remark and chosen to pretend not to hear it. By not engaging, we are giving consent. But it’s not just in the big things, it’s in the little everyday things. In teaching our children right from wrong by not lying, not stealing and treating everyone with respect.
Its slime has permeated society. So now what are we going to do? Individually and collectively we are responsible for upholding the Truth.
But how does one do that if they have never been taught. I remember my parents teaching; you only have your word and once that’s compromised, you got nothing It is how people did business on their word and a handshake. It was expected that each would hold true to their word.
So what does all this mean spiritually, after all this is a Lenten reflection? I believe that God gives us opportunities to grow in this virtue every day, it is up to us to change our little corner of the world by speaking truth and living truth. In this way we become ambassadors for Christ by becoming more virtuous in our dealings with others and ourselves.
As they say, the truth shall set you free.
