Lenten Spiritual Direction From Heaven
by James Valois
Imagine, for a moment, that the Mother of God gave you personal spiritual direction for lent on living virtuously in our often troubled post-Christian civilization. People might say that you had “insider information” or the edge over all the rest of us. But the fact of the matter is that our Blessed Lady has given lenten spiritual direction to those who listen to our Lady’s-- private ecclesial-approved revelation during lent. The exact title of the particular apparitions that I reference from our Lady is: “Our Lady of Good Success of the Purification”. These apparitions were given over 400 years ago in what is now Quito, Ecuador but most of the messages are addressed the 20th century and our era. I recently wrote a book on this apparitions entitled: Our Lady’s Prophecies—God’s Messages for our Time (available at Sophia Institute Press) which I trust you will find beneficial for your lent.
In these prophecies, our Lady informed us that the prophetic messages designated for our times will include the direction we need to stay the course on the eternal truths of Church Teaching. Describing some of the trouble of the current times-- transgender activists blaspheming our Lord and his Church in a public display of mockery or the collectivist uptopians making abortion their fundamental public policy objective, highlight the gravity of the moral decisions being made visible on our screens. Our Lady’s call to courage and trust in God must elevate our souls to seek first the kingdom of God instead of surrendering to the fear. In short, to allow the blasphemy or heresy to turn into a catechetical moment and lenten meditation, we must apply the call of the Mother of God. This may be to do some reparation in our private prayer or we may be called to organize a public Eucharistic procession. It transforms the evil into spiritual direction for the long lent or what some call the passion of the Church and helps us aquire a strong will, courage, steadfastness, and trust in God. One example of transformation would be that persecution can be fruitful and the ultimate evangelism. When Church father Tertullian stated that “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church,” he was revealing how God uses persecution to build the kingdom—to make new sons and daughters of God and bring them into the community of inter-dependence and human flourishing.
When we encounter courage, and trust in God, we are refreshed by the manifold fruits. The witness of strength born of perseverance reminds us that we too can grow in these virtues. One of the essential keys is prayer to open the door to these graces. Faced with evil we must not be overcome by it but rather overcome it with good (see Rom 12:21). Therefore we must decide to face opposition in faith. We do know the end of the story from the beginning. Although things will look dire and dreadful, we need to call to mind the lesson of the saints.
Though darkness, circumstances can appear bleak but the lesson of the saints is to press on and take hold of confidence in God. He will prevail. God is all powerful and all loving. “Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed” (Heb12;12).
