A Holy Journey

It’s about the Sabbath.
“The Sabbath is made for man, not man for the Sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath” [Mk 2:27-28]
This is the sentence that stuck out to me in today’s reflection. Remembering again a simpler time, a time when one did not have to choose, as the choice was already made. Blue Laws.
With freedom comes responsibility, this is a common saying in our house, but it takes on new meaning as I ponder the abolishment of the Blue Laws.
If I am honest with myself, I too, at times, would be bored on Sunday’s and think it silly that we could not even enjoy a movie. That’s how self-centered teenagers are, not thinking of the families affected by those who had to ‘work’ so the theatre could show the movie!
When we became ‘free’ to choose what to do with the Sabbath [Sunday] we took on the responsibility of making sure we would rest on that day. So how are you/we doing with that?
Interiorly, I know that I need to rest, my family needs unstructured time, my husband needs time to recoup but it is still not happening. It is not from not wanting it, it is from the outside pressures to keep moving, keep producing, and the never stop mentality of the world.
This has me pondering anew what it means to be a follower of Christ, to be Counter Cultural in this day and age. What would that look like? What if we refused to work on Sunday’s, refused to let our teenagers work on Sundays, would we lose our jobs? Probably! Think about it, would the world ever go back to not doing business on Sunday?!!! Probably not!!! Not to mention sporting events and Little League games….24/7/365 No Sabbath!!!
To truly keep Holy the Sabbath, what does that really mean, in light the scripture? The Sabbath was made for man…not man for the Sabbath that is why Jesus [the Son of Man] is lord even of the Sabbath. (Mk 2:27-28)
To me, it means that we, those who remember the societal observance of the Sabbath [Sunday’s], must do the best we can to instill in all those who have been placed in our lives and entrusted to our care, the need for rest.
That rest, recuperation, reflection and worship are good for us, our families and society. So that Jesus can reveal to us our unique contribution in the history of salvation.
Is your stomach in knots, thinking about the backlash you might receive from you family, friends, and boss? Yeah mine is too.
