The Rest of the Story

Do you ever find yourself in a situation where you say something and the person you are talking to takes it in an entirely different context or meaning than you intended? Then you find yourself trying to explain what you meant and how you meant it…..without any luck.
In those situations, I just want to scream if you could truly see inside me, you would know my intentions, thought process and how I chose those words. In essence you would know my heart!!
We are human beings and no matter how much we can sympathize, relate or get another person, we will never experience things in the exact same way. We are a relational species, it matters that we ‘know’ others and they ‘know’ us. But sometimes our relationships fall flat. The other doesn’t see things exactly the same way. Our words are misunderstood, our intentions questioned and our feelings excused. When this happens, it can leave us feeling isolated and alone. Totally misunderstood and rejected.
I wonder why we are surprised by this scenario, as it happens over and over in my life and yours. We want to feel connected and understood but that will never happen because no other human can know our hearts.
I wonder if Jesus feels this way about us, yearning to ‘know’ us and for us ‘know’ him. So how well do you ‘know’ Jesus? That is the focus of today’s reading.
It’s a good one to ponder, for the only way to ‘know’ Jesus is to spend time with him, like we would with anyone else. The difference is, Jesus KNOWS us He GETS us, the word made flesh, created us and we have been in His heart and mind before the universe was spoken into existence.
I like those little if/then thoughts. If we have been in the heart and mind before the world was set on its axis then we KNOW Jesus as we have been with Him for millions of years!!!!
What is it about being knit in our mother’s wombs and born into the world that causes us to forget who Jesus is?
All of these points are good to ponder in this season of Lent because our focus is on Jesus and our relationship with him. A time to come to terms with the reality that Jesus is the only one who knows our hearts.
Jesus, knit in his mother’s womb and born into the world to experience humanity as a way to teach us about ourselves, comfort us in our afflictions and heal our souls.
