On Super Bowl Sunday 2016, I finished reading the book written by Matthew Kelly entitled “Rediscover Jesus – An Invitation.” The 188 - page soft cover edition was a gift to me from my parish by way of a friend. I am grateful to both for inviting me to walk with them more closely with Our Lord and Savior! I give my full recommendation to those who seek to re-define their current relationship with the greatest Man to walk on earth.
One of my favorite themes that Kelly writes throughout the book tells us to “become the best version of yourself.” I first learned this phrase a couple years ago attending a health transformation class, and we can apply this mantra in every aspect of our lives to care for our entire being. Each new idea is broken up into a small chapter, which greatly appeals to a short attention span! There are four memory aids that follow each chapter: a point to ponder, a verse to live, a question to consider, and a prayer. These parts can be used to start discussions with other readers who read the book as well. The topics’ organization is well constructed and the content flows along smoothly.
Some highlights of my favorite passages came in the second half of the book. While a few of the early subjects were drawn out at length over a few chapters, he outlines with adequate discussion practical ways for busy people to get close to Jesus, stay close to Him, and close the gap. Next he writes on days when sin beats you down: “…pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and begin again.” Later he talks about how “Our fear and brokenness can be an obstacle (holding us back from embracing the Gospel of Jesus Christ).” You can draw helpful inspiration from this book to align your daily life with God’s plans.
I quote from chapter ten’s prayer:
“Jesus, begin a revolution of love in my heart today. Teach me to love myself as you love me, so that I can love all those who cross my path in a way that reminds them that you changed the world.”
