Saint Roch, also known as San Rocco or Saint Rocco, is a patron saint of dogs, bachelors, surgeons, and invalids. He was born in Montpellier, France, in 1295 to a wealthy family. His father was a nobleman, and his mother was a devout Catholic who instilled in him a strong faith from a young age.
Saint Roch's life was marked by numerous events that demonstrated his compassion for others and his unwavering commitment to his faith. When he was just 20 years old, his parents passed away, leaving him a significant inheritance. Rather than keep the money for himself, Saint Roch gave it away to the poor and needy, devoting his life to serving God.
One of the most well-known events in Saint Roch's life occurred when he traveled to Italy during a period of plague. He ministered to the sick and dying, healing many of them with his touch. However, he himself became infected with the disease and was forced to retreat to a nearby forest, where he lived alone for several months. According to legend, a dog brought him food and licked his wounds, nursing him back to health.
After recovering from the plague, Saint Roch returned to Montpellier, only to be mistaken for a spy and thrown into prison. He died there, but not before a miraculous sign appeared over his head, indicating his sanctity.
Saint Roch was canonized in 1584 by Pope Gregory XIII. His feast day is celebrated on August 16th, the anniversary of his death.
