Saint Zygmunt Szczesny Felinski was a Polish bishop who is known for his unwavering faith, dedication to the Church, and his efforts to promote education and social justice. He is the patron saint of Poland.
Zygmunt Felinski was born on November 1st, 1822, in Dukla, a town near Krakow, Poland. He was the son of a noble family and received a Jesuit education in Lwow (now Lviv, Ukraine) before studying theology in Rome. In 1844 he returned to Poland and entered the diocesan seminary of Zhytomyr. He studied at the Saint Petersburg Roman Catholic Theological Academy.
After being ordained a priest in 1846, he returned to Poland and began serving as a parish priest.
In 1862, Felinski was appointed bishop of the diocese of Tarnow. He quickly gained a reputation for his zeal and piety, as well as his efforts to improve the education and social conditions of his flock. He established schools, orphanages, and other charitable institutions and worked tirelessly to promote Catholic education.
Felinski's outspoken defense of Polish culture and language brought him into conflict with the Russian authorities, who were then occupying Poland. In 1877, he was arrested and imprisoned in Saint Petersburg for his outspoken defense of the Polish people. Despite his confinement, he continued to write letters and homilies encouraging his fellow Poles to resist the oppression of their occupiers.
After two years of imprisonment, Felinski was released but was banished to Vologda, in the far north of Russia. He continued to work for the Polish cause, however, and corresponded regularly with his fellow Poles. In 1884, he was permitted to return to Poland, but his health had been permanently damaged by his long years of confinement and exile. He died in his hometown of Dukla, on September 17th, 1895.
Felinski's cause for beatification was introduced in 1936, but it was not until 2002 that he was finally declared a blessed by Pope John Paul II. In 2003, he was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II, who hailed him as a "great son of the Church and a faithful witness to Christ." The feast day of Saint Zygmunt Szczesny Felinski is celebrated on September 17th.
He is remembered for his tireless efforts to promote education, freedom of faith, and social justice, as well as his steadfast defense of Polish independence. His life and witness continue to inspire Poles and Catholics around the world.
